I live in a state where medical marijuana is legal. Has anyone tried this for the fibro insomnia and pain. I'm getting desperate for a good night sleep. Would be most curious to know what dosages...most interested in oral (mixed with food) intake versus smoking. Response would be appreciated idea:

Marijuana has helped me a lot to handle the pain fibro causes me. It has also helped me with my appetite issues (I rarely feel hungry ever since my gallbladder surgery) and my insomnia! Marijuana does wonders, if it's legal in your state, then just do it. You'll not regret it. I like to smoke some 1 or 2 hours before bed time :) I really recommend it, specially if you having appetite and insomnia issues.

Just be careful because it can make you lazy and increase your appetite. Gives you the munchies and a kool-aide smile. A dear friend of mine was hooked on smoking it and he did not have a worry in the world. He could not hold a job or take care of important issues. He laid all that on his poor wife and she was as tired as we are.

I think it could help but research the side affects before you start using it. Try not to overdo the amounts you use, as it can be addictive to use. I say this just out of concern for your over-all health.

Thanks for the input and concern. As with other more traditional medications, I believe in using the smallest dose possible in order to obtain relief from my symptoms. Think I will try it and let you know how it goes.

I am entirely for it and I am in the wrong location! Dang it; still I will use it! As I understand it takes quite alot of product to make brownies, etc. I've had them though and they were amazing, helped a ton!
I like pot a whole helluva lot better than the vicodin! Did I mention I'm a grandma? It's all good---except the infernal pain!

1sweed is a little misinformed. Cannabis is non-addictive, unlike opioid pain meds, has virtually no dangerous side effects, and is impossible to overdose on. I tried using it as a medicine on a doctor's recommendation for insomnia in the late 90's. My findings are that smoking is not so great to help one fall asleep, consuming is way better for that. Smoking does help immensely to increase appetite for those of us nauseated by food, as well as take care of nausea after eating. Cannabis is an amazing stress reliever, which for those of us with FM does bring pain relief. Overall, I like that it helps with many of my ailments while not making me worse from side effects. Additionally, the medical community has found that cannabis is not physiologically addicting, like opioids, most sleep medications, or caffeine.
For consumption, I recommend making cannabis butter. There are many videos and forums that can go into more detail if you need, but the concept is easy. First, boil the ground up leaves, stems, and/or flowers for 3-8 hours (opinions vary, I do it for about 6 hours and have good results) with butter. The cannabinoids are bound in oil and you want to draw out the oil from the plant material and have it bind to the fat in the butter. Next, strain water into a large enough bowl using cheesecloth in strainer, pour clean hot water over material to rinse out butter/oil, squeeze cheesecloth to get water/oil/butter out. (My wife like to make me hot cocoa by tying off the cheesecloth and steeping in warm milk and adding melted chocolate chips, never slept better) Set the bowl of water/butter in the fridge for a few hours, the butter rises and solidifies. You can then carefully pull the butter off and store in a sealed container in the fridge. The "canna-butter" can be substituted in any recipe calling for butter or vegetable oil. Personally, I make brownies from mix and use the butter instead of vegetable oil. Cookies are also convenient. (Please treat as any medicine and keep out of reach of children!) If your state has dispensaries, you may be able to buy ready-to-eat products.
It sounds like you are new to cannabis, it will take some time to determine the dosage that best suits your need. Keep in mind that it takes about an hour or so for effects to kick in, and the effects will last many hours (about 8 hours for me). If you take a little too much, don't worry (overdose levels are way too high to worry about), just stay calm and realize the effects will pass. Start off small and remember to wait about 2 hours before deciding to take more if you aren't feeling it. The effects can creep up on you and can be overwhelming if one ingests more than one needs.
Do your research first, as with any new medicine. See if the risks are worth the benefits for you. Personally, I have found cannabis to be the safest drug to use for many of my ailments (insomnia, lack of appetite, nausea from pain and food, stress, anxiety).

I hope this info helps. Good luck and be well.

1 sweed is not misinformed. Once you start using it you will find it hard to stop using it. The effects are wonderful and you will enjoy la-la land. Whether you smoke it or bake brownies, or consume it in any manner, it is a hard habit to break. So should you attempt using it be aware of all the facts, and be sure you really want to go down this road.

I have had personal experience dealing with people who used cannabis on a daily basis and I do know what I am talking about. Knowing the facts will keep you safer if you choose to try it. It is no different than other really bad habit like smoking or drinking, or taking illegal drugs, in which all are very hard to quit, when you become addicted to using them. :(

Again, thanks for the input. I will enter this decision with caution from my fibro friends. At this point in time, the benefits seem to outweigh the risks. I am currently only able to sleep in one hour intervals at night (which really sucks) and have either developed allergies or adverse reactions to medications typically used to treat that (ie. amitryptiline, etc). Hopefully, a better night sleep will improve my daytime hypersomnia (which is now bordering on narcolepsy). As for the arthritis and fibro pain, I still get some relief from good old Ibuprofen, but I now believe my lack of sleep contributes to the pain or at least to my ability to cope with the pain. It will probably be several months until I can do this as there is some sort of fee and educational hoop you have to jump through in order to legally obtain the drug. But, I will definitely write back when I've tried it and let you all know what I learn. Thanks everyone. Stay as well as possible!

I'm in the wrong state, too, but I would most definitely try it, if I could. Please keep us posted, b/c I'm very interested. I hope it helps you.

I have used it for breakthrough pain. I have a diffuser since smoking can harm your lungs. When I am in a huge flareup, I use it and within an hour the fibro fog is lifted and the searing pain is decreased from a ten to about a two. I have a few friends who use it recreationally, one is an actuary and is very successful and another is a computer programming specialist who is also very successful. I personally think that alcohol is more addicting than weed.

I live in a state in which medical marijuana is legal. I use it for pain and nausea. Before marijuana became legal, I was taking a combination of percocet and methadone and getting very little relief. I'd tried lyrica (had the visual problems with it), neurontin, cymbalta, amitryptilene, and other drugs too numerous to mention. I use both edible marijuana in the form of little chocolate squares and I smoke using a vaporizer.
The marijuana has been a lifesaver for me. As another writer said, it can make you lazy, and it can if you use the wrong kind. You need to check yourself whether an indica or a sativa strain works for you. I use indica for nausea and sativa for joint and muscle pain. I've had no trouble with munchies, or being lazy. In fact, I need to medicate before I'm able to do *anything*... from cleaning the kitchen to grocery shopping.

Gosh, I am so glad that you all are open to the idea of using medical marijuana. I've been championing it for years. I had a feeling that the members of this forum would be on the same page. We just have to get the other states in the US to jump on the bandwagon so we all can enjoy the pain relief provided by cannabis. Making cannabutter is easy. So you don't have to smoke it. You can eat it!

A habit's being "bad" or difficult to quit are not hallmarks of addiction. Addiction has specific features that are not seen when folk stop using marijuana.

Ending marijuana usage does not result in physical withdrawal, even though the user might be a bit irritable for a day or two. No cold sweats, no vomiting, no dilated pupils, and no running nose with excess mucous.

A user's being irritable for a couple of days is not withdrawal due to addiction. It is the same grumpiness seen in coffee drinkers caught without caffeine in the kitchen.

They won't need to attend any of the pricey treatment programs that hope labeling any bad habit an addiction will cause someone to use their services...and this is exactly why people are labeling marijuana "addictive". Addiction treatments generate piles of money and the more addictions there are, the more money these corporate programs pull in!

I'd be really careful with the word "addiction". It is being bastardized for the sake of profits!

i found martial arts focus and center to be a great aid its far from gone but you making your mind focus elsewhere

I don't know about fibromaylgia, but I have a family member who uses medical marijuana for arthritis, and it works amazing. It puts them in a fantastic mood, their muscles are more relaxed, and it just treats so much more than just the physical pain. Emotional pain is such a huge factor in it, too, and marijuana helps put things into perspective so many feel less depressed.
