Default Do you run to the doctor whenever new symptoms appear?

Hi guys! I just wanted to know if I'm the only one who feels like running to the doctor as soon as possible whenever I notice a new symptom (ie: a new ache). Recently I developed a very sore neck, I had suffered from that in the past, but not often. I'm just waiting to see the doc to tell him about it and ask him for a referral so I can get a spine MRI done.

Sometimes I feel like the doctors see me like a freak because I pay very close attention to my own body and any new symptoms. I start checking online (yes, most of the time isn't the best idea, but if I don't do it no one else will and I don't trust doctors at all, I don't believe they'll give me a referral to all the tests I might really need and often need to guide them a bit - just like what happened to the brain MRI! BEST decision ever!) and I often find what I need. I then go to the doctor (not right away, I need to wait at least 2 weeks or so to get an appointment to see a specialist, if not more sometimes). And yes, I DO look for second opinions often.

Point is, I don't assume every new thing is caused by fibro. But I often wonder how many fellow fibro sufferers do?

A lot of doctors just prescribe you new meds because they can't pinpoint the problem. So be careful about that. Getting frequent MRIs if you are in pain is a good idea but remember you know your body more than anyone else. Researching online about things is a great idea. I myself suffered from anxiety back in the day and did a lot of research about it before going to a doctor who basically prescribed exactly what I read about.

Exactly! I also Google the meds the doctors give me before taking them most of the time! You know what's the most frustrating thing about doing the right thing and going to the doctor when I notice a new symptom? When they do exactly what you said; just give me meds because they're too lazy and don't care to find the source of the new symptom. That's when things get ugly and I insist on getting x test done to see what is going on (thank you internet!).

I know the doctor will most likely say no to that MRI referral, but I will have to insist. I have to think what I'm going to say to convince him the night before the appointment. Gosh, I feel like a psychologist! Trying to figure out not what to say (I know what to say) but how to say it so the doc don't take it wrong and feel like I'm treating him like a secretary! (A doc told me that once!). So yeah, stressing! As if the darn pain wasn't stressing enough! Jesus!

I think that we need to be our best doctors. Sure, we need to see them, but when their medicine doesn't work we should apply what works for us, investigate what makes us feels better.

No, my doctor has been extremely unhelpful. I would find further visits futile. My condition has improved, but not due to any doctor's assistance. I actually haven't been to the doctor for any ailment in about 6 years now.

Yeah, sadly sometimes doctors can be insensitive to our needs, so we need to learn to deal with the disease sometimes alone, that is why I find this forum so great.

I agree with this. It's unfortunate that we have to rely on other means than our doctors to help us, but indeed they are very helpful places. Like here for fibromyalgia and other forums where you can connect with other sufferers.

No, I don't. I try to figure out what has changed that May be causing the new pain or other symptom. I'd go crazy if I worried about everything, but I don't hide my head in that sand either. It's about finding a balance. I had other medical issues besides fibro. I'm a cancer survivor so I know the power of a positive attitude.

I know what you mean, I only go to the doctor when the symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks or when it's too serious, like very bad headaches or abdominal pain. Actually going to the neurologist this year might have saved my life, listening to our bodies is important, isn't about getting worried, but about doing something about a persistent symptom (without panicking and actually doing something). Going to the doctor rarely leaves a good taste in my mouth.

Well, yeah... Auto medication isn't a good idea tho, but some natural remedies could do the trick sometimes. I personally love using ointments and oils for my aches, that way I don't need to take a ton of meds every day! I hate having to depend on the doctors, I totally hate going to the doctor

Woah, lucky you! I wish I could do the exact same thing! Sadly we depend on those people, our live and health is in their hands. I hate that thought, because most of them couldn't seem to care less even if they tried really hard!

When I was little I thought most doctors were driven by vocation, and really cared about their patient and helping them was their priority. As I grew up I realized that wasn't the case Sadly it's so hard to find a good caring doctor... almost impossible.
