Question Newly diagnosed--Started Gabapentin and So tired

I'm newly diagnosed. Doc started me on Gabapentin yesterday. I took the first dose (only 100 mg) last night and slept very well and felt much better when I got up the morning. Then this afternoon, the fatigue and brain fog hit terribly!! Is this normal?!

My husband had the same reaction to gabapentin when he was on it. He could sleep 24 hours if I didn't wake him. His memory was horrible. Talk to your doctor. Maybe breaking up the dosage may give you less reactions.

Hi TMichCPC,

Everybody responds differently to meds, but just one or two days isn't enough.it might take longer for your body to respond well.I find taking gabapentin at night helps the drowsiness and helps u sleep.Taking it during the day time probably won't be good for u.But I would give it at least a week hopefully the day drowsiness will wear off and your body will adjust better.I found it better if I took a lower doses for me , like 300 mg at night and not higher doses. That was just my body, and it helped with my leg pains.
I hope it works for you.

I was very tired for the first couple weeks on gabapentin. It was increased slowly and now I take 900mg in the morning and 1500mg at night.
I do not feel the tiredness side effect. Your body needs time to adjust. Give it a couple weeks and see what happens

I remember when I started taking gabapentin that I felt a lot better right away until the fatigue was extremely annoying and I went through a week where I slept almost 20 hours a day and still felt as if I had stayed awake for two weeks without coffee. Right now I'm on a much higher dose than the trial I had started with gabapentin, but even now I have to take a long several hour nap in the early afternoon to be able to make it to dinnertime. With my higher dose, I've noticed that I usually have several brain fog spells/ episodes that last from anywhere between 10 minutes and even up to an hour or two at a time. When it comes, I'm extremely disorientated that sometimes I have sit/ lay on the floor until I can look around without feeling like I'm falling out of the sky. I didn't use to have the brain fog as badly, but I am on a higher dose than 100mg. (I currently take 6 300mg capsules spread throughout the day)

I started a second dose (100 mg) in the morning now. I don't feel like it has done much in relieving my symptoms and has only made me minimally more tired (so tired anyway)! Supposed to start a 3rd dose a day at the end of the week.

I appreciate hearing your stories! Helps me to know I may just need to keep going.

Hi TMichCPC,

I found it hard to take during the day, just from the side effect of tiredness and we are already fatigued! So see how it goes.If it isn't right for u , don't be afraid to talk to the dr and tell him it's not working for u.When they put me on higher doses , I was getting more and more tired during the day and having memory problems. So I only take it at night.im going to make an appt with a Nuerologist and see if there is anything else he can suggest to help.I take Meloxicam which helps with the leg pain also.

Hope everything works out
