I just thought I'd share my experience with acupuncture.. A friend gave me the idea to give it a try, so I did; I went to three different places and got three quite different treatments.
1. Place : acu needle in my forehead and a few points in the head (supposedly to cure my chronic fatigue) - It didn't hurt too much although one of the needle points started to bleed when the acupuncturist pulled the needle out. (went for about 5 sessions)
2. Place: acu needles in fingers and head. Quite painful.. I couldn't keep them in for the full 45 minute session. We did an 'electroacupuncture' instead. (went for 3 sessions)
3. Place: acu needles in my calfs, thighs, lower arms, head. VERY painful. I was shaking and crying from the pain. Unfortunately, the acupuncturist refused to remove the needles so I was forced to endure it for the full 30 minute session:neutral: (went only once:roll:)

So I would love to know how your experiences with acupuncture were. I can honestly say that you wouldn't be able to get me back into an acupuncture session, even if you paid me a fortune8)

I've been REALLY interested in acupuncture for awhile now, but I don't think my insurance covers it so I haven't gone yet. I was actually wondering how painful it is and whether it really does anything. After you got it done, did you feel any different? From what I've read, it takes quite a few sessions to really notice a difference. I've also read that it can cause soreness after the first few sessions.

I have a friend who swears by acupuncture, but he doesn't suffer from the type of pain that I do! I have to wonder if it is really effective. I wonder what caused you to have so much pain with the third acupuncturist?! It just sounds terrible! Anyway, I would like to know about other people's experiences with acupuncture, as well!

I had always heard the acupuncture was not painful. If I went to someone who placed needles in my face and head that bled and other areas that hurt, then doctor refused to remove them, I would have raised hell and then never gone back. I have never had the experience and doubt I would ever try it, but some people really seem to enjoy it.

Let's let other members share what they know about acupuncture. Sorry your were treated that badly and put through all that pain. Seems like the person wanted to be sure your got your full 30 minutes, so they would get paid. Never let doctor treat you, that does not listen when you ask them to stop. It is scary and down right rude. :)

apike, too bad your insurance won't cover it. I had to pay out of my own pocket myself.. if it had worked for me I'm not even sure I would have been able to afford that many sessions. I suppose some people really respond to it, because my friend finds it extremely helpful in dealing with lots of things, including pain and stress. Too bad I wasn't one of those people but I'm trying to find another method that might be useful. If you are worried about pain, just ask the acupuncturist to give you a trail session, e.g. only use one needle firs or only on a point that doesn't hurt (like the head area).

1sweed, yes indeed.. when you look how acupuncture is presented to the customers you see people looking happy, relaxed and even like they are having fun : ] Not everyone will react the same way.

Yeah, I think I'm going to revisit my insurance plan and make sure it doesn't cover acupuncture. I know they recently changed some stuff so maybe now it does. One question I have for you is about how big the needles are. Do they use different needle sizes or are they all the same size?

I've had friends swear by acupuncture too and I've also had friends tell me that massage is another great way to reduce pain. On the other hand, I've heard that massage can also be pretty painful! My general doctor offers a new type of alternative pain therapy that I would like to ask her about because my knee is starting to get really bad. I can't recall the name of the therapy at the moment, but I know that it's nonsurgical and is supposed to reduce your pain levels by quite a bit. Once I remember it, I'll try to find out more about it!

What other type of pain therapy are you planning on trying, if you don't mind me asking?

Previously, I too had visited such acupuncture centers, but then one of my friend recommended me needle less acupuncture. I was very excited to visit that center, and after my first visit I was relived. I realized that I don't have to bear the pain of those horrible needles. There are many such acupuncture centers and which performs these techniques.

apike, massage can indeed be painful! i often have get painfully stiff muscles and joins so i regularly go to have massages and it's torture both during and after the massage.. It starts feeling better about a day later though.
CherylEmery, that sounds interesting! Thanks for mentioning it. I'll have to see if there is a needles acupuncture clinic near me.

I've never heard of needless acupuncture! I'm going to look that up! My knee is getting worse and I really, really need something that's going to alleviate the pain. It's just pure agony at this point. Same with my back. Currently, I have the white hot pain between my shoulder blades and I'm just so done with it.

I tried acupuncture when I was younger... several years ago. I went to there in hope to treat my PCOS. My mom took me there, I was just a teen! I went only for one session, I didn't (and my mom didn't like it either) like the fact he prescribed some homeopathic medications. I mean, the session were expensive enough back then and now he also wanted us to buy several homeopathic ''medications''?! I was a teen back then and having to take x number of drops every 4 hours was a routine I couldn't (neither my mom) get into.

My might it a try later on, my insurance might start covering acupuncture. If that's the case then I might actually try it.

I go to acupuncture about once a week, and have been going for about 6 months. My doctor worked out a plan for me since I committed to seeing him long term, so I pay $38/ hour session. If it is continuously painful, something is wrong and the needle should be adjusted. When I'm stressed, inflammed, or feeling pain the needles do hurt for a few seconds after getting poked, but the pain disappears and the relaxation begins. Acupuncture has helped a lot with my chronic fatigue! It also helps a ton for my digestion problems. It does reduce pain and inflammation quite a bit over time. Most of all, it calms my adrenals and allows me to truly relax, which helps me get recharged. I highly recommend it in conjunction with chiropractic care, though, because the better your circulation, the better acupuncture works.

Just make sure to go to a well trained professional. It is really important to get someone who really understands Chinese medicine so they can choose the most effective points to put the needles. Someone who isn't that good would put needles in the same spots on all their patients. You want someone who can really read your sympotoms and place needles accordingly.

I have had acupuncture many times...it never hurt....at first i had the doctor...chase the pain so to speak...and would get some relief but not long lasting...the last time i asked him to treat the fatigue...and i felt very uplifted by that treatment...acupuncture releases your endorphins, like exercise..it can and should be very relaxing..usually low lighting and relaxing asian music. My insurance does not cover it...but i am needing to go back, as this winter has been tough for fibromyalgia and my energy is low again...very small needles are used i feel it when its tapped in for a second but am then unaware of them for the 30 to 40 minutes they are in place..i only stopped then because i was getting another therapy called strain and counterstrain which my insurance does cover.

Acupuncture and ginseng can treat a great number of ailments, not just fibro! Does anyone here use ginseng at all?

Scotch, I use ginsing when I need an energy boost and my fatigue is too strong. Do you mean we should use it during acupuncture? Or just in addition to it?

First, what is strain, counterstrain? I have used acupuncture and have found it helpful. I stopped going because it seemed like I had too many different medical appointments. After reading this, I'm thinking I need to call an set up an appointment. It was relaxing. I do love my massages, although they are sometimes painful. My therapist is great about changing her technique when I'm tender. She seems to sense it without me saying, which always amazes me. If the acupuncture hurt, they weren't doing something right. I've only had a couple of times where it's hit a nerve or something and she pulled it out and put it in another area close to where it was before. My acupuncturist also uses gongs and bowls. I know, sounds strange, but It really seems to be relaxing and refreshing when I'm done....
