Can anyone give me any advice on how to deal with the chronic fatigue please? Having a flare up atm.

Hi Danielle,

I'm sorry you're in the grips of a flare. There are two things I can suggest to help - things that help me at least!

The first is supplements. Doing research on Fibromyalgia, I found a number of studies that connected fibro with poor mitochondrial function. Mitochondria are the little energy converters within each of our cells, and when they are not working efficiently, we are going to feel exhausted. In fact, the exact symptoms are fatigue, weakness, and exertion intolerance. With that in mind, I started supplementing to support my mitochondria, and found that my fog and fatigue improved a lot. The supplements that have worked for me are Acetyl-L-Carnatine, CoQ10, and Alpha Lipoic Acid. If you get L-Carnatine, make sure you get the Acetyl form as this is the only kind that crosses the blood brain barrier.

The second is to work on holistic management of fibromyalgia - so that means going into all-out self-care mode, doing relaxation exercises, resting, moving a little every day, and tuning in to what your body needs. The idea is to help your body switch between the sympathetic nervous system - so-called "fight/flight/freeze" mode that activates when we're in a stressed state - to the parasympathetic nervous system - so-called "rest and digest", that allows our bodies to self repair and recover. Have a Google to get your head around these, and the different chemistry that operates within your body when one or the other is dialled up. I'm convinced they are pivotal to the triggering and duration of flares - I hope that makes sense to you too!

Good luck 🌷 I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you. I shall look these up when I'm out of my flare up as concentration is a no go.

Jemima, my excellent chiropractor (who put me onto acetyl L-carnitine) told me that eating beets and arugula will also support mitochondrial function. I cannot imagine eating beets...it is unfortunately the only vegetable that I just cannot stomach at all.....but I have started eating arugula every day. It's got a lovely spicy flavor and is good in eggs and salads and probably other things as well.

And I may try to eat pickled beets....maybe if I swallow them very fast, like medicine, I can get them down......

Do you take the alpha lipoic Acid and the coQ10 in capsule form, or are they in certain foods? I may want to try that in addition to the L-carnitine. I know that the L-carnitine has really made a difference in my life, but there is room for improvement.

Thank you - that's a good tip! Arugula is yum. Beets can be disguised by blending then into veg based sauces with strong flavours, or smoothies (ginger covers it pretty well) - if that helps! I used to hate them having been traumatised by my grandmother's favourite recipe as a kid 😂 but I've actually learned to like them now.

I take the ALA and CoQ10 as capsules. Alpha lipoic acid can be found at low levels in meat and some veg, but it's very hard to get the same kind of quantities as found in supplements. CoQ10 can be found in fish, organ meats and whole grains. On paper my diet was already high in all the right foods, so having felt a difference In happy to load up with the supplements!

Thanks, Jemima. I will look for those supplements. It's worth a try.

I may try the ginger. Maybe if I put in kale as well as ginger it would hide the beet and I love the taste of kale. I'd have to close my eyes so as not to see that color, though. :cautious:
Arugula is so yummy.
Maybe if you also used to hate beets but don't now, the same could happen for me, who knows. (although (ugh) I doubt it...)

I wish you luck with that!!

Hi Jemima,

I am also in the grips of a flare and the worst part for me is exactly what you quote as symptoms when the mitochondria are not working efficiently: fatigue, weakness, and exertion intolerance. It’s lasted two weeks so far, and I am desperate to find something that helps!

My doctor had suggested Alpha Lipoic Acid and Acetylene-L-Carnatine for peripheral neuropathy, so after reading your post I’ve decided to start taking it for both the neuropathy and fibro. She had suggested up to 600 mg twice a day for the Lipoic and I think it was 1000 mg twice a day of the L-Carnatine but I don’t have that info right now so I might be wrong on that one. I’m also going to start taking CoQ10 again (had taken the Costco brand), but there are SOOOO many brands and places to buy them. I got the Alpha Lipoic Acid and Acetyl L-Carnatine from SuperiorLabs via Amazon, but I don’t even know if that is a good brand. Any suggestions for the CoQ10?

Thank you for any info you can give me!

The one that I use is definitely a good brand, and was recommended to me by my chiropractor. It is:
Methylation Essentials L-Carnitine (acetyl l-carnitine) and it is also available on Amazon.

Since taking this daily I have had so much more energy, especially late in the day. It helps to increase mitochondrial function. Only one caveat: if your mitochondrial function is fine and something else is causing the fatigue, it may not do anything for you. For me, I saw the difference right away. But I always recommend giving something at least a month's trial.

Do you think the Methylation part is important, and is that the one by Dr. Harris? I read about methylation and its positive impact on biochemical reactions in the body. The Acetyl L-Carnitine I have doesn’t mention methylation.

I really hope those supplements help you! I'm taking 650mg per day of the ALA and 1000mg per day of the ALC, so perhaps experiment with your dosing and see how you feel - obviously more is worth it if it does the trick, but also expensive if it's more than you need!

It's tricky to recommend a CoQ10 because I think the brands are so different over here. I'm taking one from a company called Ved right now which gives a whopping 500mg per capsule. It's tricky, because pricing on CoQ10 varies so much. I hope you find something affordable that gives you a boost.
