Hey guys, do you think bruising could be a sign of (old) nerve damage under the skin, and possibly broken veins, and if so how can I fix these things? New bruises are always popping up all over my legs, and seems have been bruised that come and go forever now. I’ve had many injuries through life that I think are catching up with me, with this flare. It just hurts and I’ll try almost anything, but not sure if spinal cord surgery is the answer I just don’t want to become totally paralyzed either way.

Hi Lemon - looking at causes for seemingly spontaneous bruising, e.g. on healthline confirms my gut feeling that it doesn't make sense that it's nerves or old injuries catching up with you - which may be the case, but resulting in local pains (Scar- and Bonework etc. might help), not in bruises. Rather I'd suggest meds or nutrient deficiency decreasing blood ability to clot. (Unlikely rare inherited disorders which'd need to be excluded.) So I'd get your meds checked for anticoagulants and think about trying vit. C, K and get iron checked. Is that any help?

Bruising would not be caused by old injuries spontaneously coming back again, since that really doesn't happen to my knowledge. A more likely thing would be, as Jay suggests, a deficiency causing bruises to happen far more readily that they normally would, meaning that you lightly bumped something - so lightly that you didn't even pay attention to it at the time -- but it was enough to cause a bruise.

If this is happening a lot it should be investigated by a doctor to see if it needs treatment or reducing one medication or if taking a supplement would make it better.

I have always had bruises appear on my body, sometimes huge ones, without knowing exactly what caused them, but I have also always been very active and with a high pain tolerance, so I will at times cause a bruise without feeling it enough to pay any attention. I also tend to be hyper-focused on what I am doing, which adds to the not noticing. These days I feel it more if I bump into something, so it's less common for me not to know where a bruise came from.

Thank you both for your thoughtful replies. I know my vitamin b and d run low, and take supplements. Also my k runs low so I take potassium ad well. Not sure what else I should try, fish oil is hard to swallow and I’m not on much else now, keep changing around my fm stuff. I’ll be more watchful of anything, if I sleep in pj pants with pockets they bruise me it seems also but we will keep on figuring these things out

vit. C, K

Ah, sorry, I didn't mean K as in potassium, I meant vitamin K, the one often added to vitamin D: I take 20.000 IE vit. D plus K2-MK7 once a week.
Remember to check iron? And you don't take any meds? Edit: Just seen you say gabapentin - that causes a lot, but doesn't anticoagulate or cause bruising.

Right I just thought of that but no, my Kand platelets are fine. Should I try supps and see if it helps? Meds that I’m on shouldn’t cause this.

Well, no way would I do spinal cord surgery... Not sure what that's got to do with bruising tho!?!?!
But aside from that there's a load of diagnoses it could be, from easy to tough, so like sunkacola says I'd definitely get it checked by docs and not accept it, and definitely not blame fibro.

The supps are an easy & cheap first try and maybe an answer, and probably something the docs'd suggest anyway.
I usually lwork on everything at the same time - take supps and make appointments.
"Dangerous" or expensive supps I check with the doc first, but most I just look up first.
Just to show it's not that easy: Vitamins, esp. vitamin E can cause bruising!

BTW I got vitamin K wrong, it's not K2, it's K1 that may be responsible for bruising.
And I'm not sure if good platelets mean your iron levels are OK...
Vitamin C is usually OK to try (but use "protect" if your gut is sensitive).
You can theoretically get all of these if you eat healthy (e.g. K1 in green veggies, C in fruit), but sometimes it doesn't work as it should...

I would suggest that you first have a talk about this with your doctor.

Treating ourselves is fine IF the doctor has no idea what to do, or if what all the doctors have tried did not work, or if you have had the problem previously and know what helps. I am all for people taking charge in their treatment, as you all know. But if you do not know what is causing a symptom and have not even discussed it with a doctor, that has to be your first step.

Just trying supplements may be an expensive and unproductive way to approach it, and could even make things worse. On the other hand, there are several unpleasant diseases and conditions that cause easy bruising. So the first step is a doctor's opinion.

Thank you and agreed, I will check before taking k and only take my vitamins as prescribed too so I’ll check again. Last year I had this and my doc didn’t know, so we haven’t figured it out yet.

This sounds like a blood clotting issue. I have had multiple blood clots, 2 of which I almost died. I've been on blood thinners for 25 years. I often get bruises & veins popping out. I definitely recommend that you ask your doctor if he thinks this could be a blood clotting issue. Hope that helps you!!

blood clotting issue
Hi KimsC, and welcome in to our forum! 👋
So do I understand you correctly it might be like I suggested above that it's from med-thinned blood diffusing into tissue?
However Lemon says under that that it shouldn't be the taken meds... - what would you make of that then?

I don't think the medicines or supplements are causing this. Unless of course Lemon is on a certain medication that can thin the blood. Also, Vitamin K can most definitely thin your blood. Funny story for anyone reading this, when I had my 1st Deep Vein Thrombosis the doctors gave me an 8 page list of all the medications I couldn't take anymore!! I asked the doctors if they had a list of medications I could take while on blood thinners!! After 25 years I know everything there is to know about blood clots and medications to avoid while on blood thinners. I don't mean to sound like I'm ir

After 25 years I know everything there is to know about blood clots and medications to avoid while on blood thinners. I don't mean to sound like I'm an know it all (don't you hate that, I know I do.) But it comes from a blood specialist that came into my hospital room after the 1st Deep Vein Thrombosis and he spent about 2 or 3 hours talking to me. He told me I should go to nursing school, because I would need to know as much as I could about the subject. After all I was only 23 years old. Thank you for welcoming me to the forum!!

You don't? Then what? I'm confused... 🤪 I can't find any evidence for how blood clotting itself would cause "bruising"...??

Blood clotting & blood thinners can cause bruises. I'll give you several examples of how I know this. When I had my 1st Deep Vein Thrombosis, they had to come into my hospital room multiple times a day to draw my blood to see if my blood was too thin or too thick. Back then they either did it from the IV or just drew the blood and I still have scars from that. Another example is about 2 or 3 weeks ago I fell hard. At first there was just some bleeding on my ear and it was very late at night. I didn't want to wake my husband up, so I just managed the bleeding on my own. Then 3 days later a bruise showed up along my jaw and neck. That bruise got bigger and more noticeable. No big deal for me because of all the many bruises I've had over the years. However, my daughter (29 years old) decided it was a good time to make the trip to Texas. So, I had to explain to her about the bruise, because there were lots of places she wanted to go and take mom with her. She's no stranger to my bruising, but over the years when I've had bruises or scars and there's been so many people ask me if I got into a fight or if I was in an abusive relationship. Then, I have to go through the whole story. It's a little tedious at times and yes even aggravating.
