I'm new to these forums and I have read a few articles on Fibromyalgia and I was just wondering, is Fibromyalgia a disease that only affect women? Or can men be susceptible to this disease as well?

I'm asking because I (a male) seem to have most of the symptoms of Fibromyalgia but I've been getting conflicting answers to this question, from the articles I've read.

My kids mother keep telling my to stop worrying about it, and that I'm to young (24) to have such a disease, even if guys can get it. Can someone please answer this question for me though, it would ease my mind one way or the other.

Please help!

youngnova,
Yes, men do get fibro. There are several men on our forum already and so you are not alone in trying to find out more about this condition. If you think you might have fibro, I would suggest that you go see a Rheumatologist to find out for sure. sometimes the pain can come from normal everyday life of over doing or growing pains, but if the pain or other symptoms don't go away then it is important to see a doctor to find out if you have any reason for your concerns.

I am glad you found this forum and I hope you will come back often and read the posts on the health problems that bother you the most. feel free to post more questions or help others with your opinions. Welcome to the forum. :)

Hi man, yes guys can get fibro. Ihave it and it is not fun.

It's more common in women, but men can have it as well. And your age has nothing to do with it, there are many young people here, myself included (age 25 now), who have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Rest assured you are not alone here!
And as 1sweed suggested, see a rheumatologist if you can, they will be able to do a lot of testing to make sure nothing else is wrong like an autoimmune disease or arthritis etc. You may also want to see a neurologist as well.
Welcome, and please have a look through the forum /posts, you will find we have many male members! You will also find many posts about different things you can try on your own to see if they help your pain! Sorry you had to seek us out, but glad you're here, you have many friends here who are all very accepting and care about each other!

I am 26 and have it, though I'm a woman, and my 45 year old priest has had it since his 20's. He has been my mentor in fighting it since he found the best doctor and unless a few tricks he was able to pass on to me. He also has a male friend with it.

Yes, my great Uncle had fibro and it caused him a great, great deal of pain. Rest his soul.

Youngnova, sorry to tell you, but even ''young'' people can suffer from fibro. I actually suspect my fibro started to show symptoms back when I was 16 years old. I've even heard of kids with fibro, not sure about that, but I guess it can happen.

If you are really worried about fibro, then you should see a rheumatologist soon. I'd also like to add that men can have fibro as well, it's just fibro in men isn't as common as it is in women, but there are several male members in this forum who suffer from it. Just get checked by a specialist, and clear all your doubts. If you are still in doubt after that, then don't hesitate to go for a second opinion... after all it's your health we are talking about.

Men can get fibro for sure. One of my guy friends has it, in fact. I think it is more commonly diagnosed in women. I am not sure that means more women get it. I think sometimes guys do not go to the doctor for symptoms as soon or as much.

All of the research that I have done says that it is possible for a male to have fibro, but not nearly as common as it is for women. Both my husband and myself believe that is the cause of his chronic pain but we are having a hard time getting his doctor to listen to him since he is already medicated for it and he is a male.

It certainly is more common in women by quite a noticeable degree, although I have no idea why. I'm a man and while I don't have Fibro I certainly suffer from some of the symptoms. As others have said plenty of men do get it though.

I wonder if women are just more vocal about it? I've often wondered if my brother has fibro. He has similar aches and pains to me (I'm female) and he's always tired. He's pretty young, too. He's only 20 but he says there are days he wakes up and just feels bad.

While I think statistics show that it happens more often with women, men absolutely do get diagnosed with fibro, too.

And age really has nothing to do with it... it doesn't discriminate, and there is no age that's "too young" for it, sadly.

I am a 25 year old guy. I grew up a healthy kid, but during college I started noticing symptoms of fibro. I am currently being diagnosed with fibro. So to answer your question, yes it happens.

Of course men can have them. But is is more common among women i.e nine times more common in men than women.

I'm sorry for bumping this old thread, but I have been very busy and haven't been on here for a while. But yeah I know I have to see a doctor but I don't have health insurance so I'm trying to diagnose this disease myself.

And the pain doesn't occur every day, it comes and goes. I'm in the process of getting health insurance, hopefully within the next 3 months. When I do, the first thing I'm going to do is get this pain checked out because when it does come, it is very painful.

Thanks to everyone who responded and thanks to all the valuable information you all gave me in this thread. :)
