If your serious about a great dog, get one that doesn't shed, loves to be with you and snuggle, but also needs some interaction. This may sound terrible, but if the dog is trained to go on a piddle pad, it would help you on days that are terrible. I love animals so it's worth it to me, of course, very small dog, female. Good luck, I'm sure you will find your companion. It pays to do homework. I may have already responded to this post.....oh no lol rof.
Oh and from experiance if you do go that route, there are pads that are not as leak proof as others.

Thanks for you advice Moe1959,
I'm also feeling that a small non shedding dog is the best fit for me. These last few months I've really taken a turn for the worse so I am waiting until I'm doing a little better to make any moves. But I can still research and keep thinking about it! :)
