I'm experiencing a major fibro flare. Last night I scoured the internet for meds that reduce fibro pain and compared them to my list of meds that I've taken in the past.

I'm going to call my primary care physician tomorrow to schedule a conference call. I need her to prescribe something to reduce the fibro pain in my shoulders and neck and at base of my skull. The pain is all-consuming. And, of course, this pain triggers migraines.

I'm extremely depressed. Underlying the depression is fear. How long is the pain going to last? How intense will it become?

I'm not suicidal, but I can't envision living like this indefinitely. It's time to ask for help.

Gowe4578, I'm sorry to hear that you're going through a rough time, too.

I've taken magnesium for long periods in the past, mainly for the migraines. Sadly, it didn't help me. I hope that it gives you some much-needed relief.

I feel for everyone who suffers through fibromyalgia and migraines, same here. I take meds for fibromyalgia called Tramacet 37.5 x 2 per day but 12 years ago 1x would last 24 hrs. For Migraines I take Zomig 2.5mg within 20 minutes it's gone. But I also get Botox injections every 3 months on my head neck, jaw, shoulders which releases the tension (4years now).
I hope this can help.
Feel better soon and good luck 😊

Hi JudieS, look into Low Dose Naltrexone if you haven't already. I learned about it on the Fibromyalgia podcast (very good!). It has to be compounded into smaller doses around 5mg for fibro patients, so I had to call my pharmacy to ask how my doctor should prescribe it.

This is what he said:

"Naltrexone 0.5mg Compounded Capsule
M: 100
S: Begin with 0.5mg at bedtime , titrate up to 1.5mg at bedtime and then 4.5mg at bedtime over the course of 2 to 3 weeks.

Usual dosing for chronic pain is anywhere from 1.5mg to 4.5mg take at bedtime although I’ve heard some people use up to 6mg taken twice daily.

Once you learn what dose works best for you - you could get a Rx for that dose. For example..

Naltrexone 4.5mg Compounded Capsule
100 + 3R
Take 1 capsule at bedtime."

I started on .5mg/day and slowly increases to 5mg/day. It takes the edge off the daily body aches. It's the best thing that has worked for me so far. Note that this drug is normally used to help Opioid addiction. It blocks the Opioid receptors. So it will make opioids less effective (codeine, purcocet, morphine, etc.)

If you don't have a compounding pharmacist, or they charge too much, you can crush the larger dose pills, add water and titrate the correct amount.

Hope this helps!

I too am in a major fibro flare triggered by a bad fall where I broke my tailbone which caused sciatica in my left leg. The only thing that helps is an opiate which I can only take ocassionaly. Marijuana helps some but I don’t like the way it makes me feel. I distract myself by watching old movies.

mirfaust, thank you for your well wishes.

I'm so glad that you have meds that provide relief.

As I'm sure you know, one of the things that makes fibro so difficult to treat is how people's systems handle meds. Sadly, Tramadol (one of the ingredients in Tramacet) makes me violently ill.

Imitrex knocks out my migraines, but my insurance company thinks that I shouldn't have more than 9 migraines a month.

Botox was a miracle drug for me for a long time, though it no longer provides relief.

I spoke with my doc this a.m. and she prescribed a couple of meds to get me through this flare.

Naltrexone
Thank you, Margo! I will speak to my doc about this one.

OMG, Lolomarie, I'm sorry to hear about your fall and the resulting pain.

I tried medical MJ for about 18 months, mainly for my migraines. It helped a little -- basically took the edge off -- but I couldn't handle the expense.

Regards magnesium for migraines... I have a friend who swears by applying it to the soles of her feet... she says it’s miraculous! Honestly!
