Hi there,

I was diagnosed with FM this year by my doctor and while all my symptoms seem to match up pretty closely with FM, I have questions about one of my dominant symptoms. I've been experiencing terrible dyspnea on and off for the last 3 years. It's always upon sitting or standing that will set it off. All of a sudden it feels like I haven't taken a breath for a long time or I skip a breath and I experience dizziness and air hunger to the point of occasionally passing out. This dyspnea comes and goes for a month or 2 and then takes a month off.

I've been trying to figure out if this symptom that doesn't seem to be an ordinary FM symptom is indicative of anything else or if anyone has experienced or heard of FM and chronic dyspnea. And perhaps this is an ordinary FM symptom I wasn't aware of? There's a medical study online that talks about 2 women who experienced the exact same dyspnea and FM symptoms and only found relief after years of tests by being prescribed specifically to Amitriptyline. I have an appointment with my MD on Wednesday to discuss trying that but just wanted to see if anyone has heard of a connection with dyspnea and FM.

Thanks!

I have not heard of that connection, myself, although it is possible someone else has.

Have you seen a specialist for this problem? It sounds like something that should be seen to immediately. You might want an X-ray of your lungs, etc. Being chronically short of breath is a serious medical issue, and I hope you address it fully. Best of luck.

Hi Sunkacola,

I’ve seen quite a few specialists this year about this and each of them are stumped. I’m waiting on results for an EMG nerve test to see if nerve damage is the cause of my mechanic breathing issues. Just floating this by to see if anyone’s heard of that connection. Thanks!
