A few weeks ago I was prescribed Gabapentin to help with sleep. Earlier this week I was taken to the ER for what was thought to be an allergic reaction to the new med. In truth some of my symptoms were caused by the Gabapentin but not the serious ones. While in the ER blood panels were done and come to find out my Blood Sugars were approximately 480. I was pretty shocked considering I've not had Blood Sugar issues in the past. I call my primary care doc at the VA the next day and they say to wait a few weeks for symptoms to subside then come in for fasting blood work. They also made an appointment for me in June, yes JUNE. So two days later I'm back in the ER with a Blood Sugar level of 523 and I feel like I'm about to meet my maker. I was given multiple bags of IV fluids then medications prior to being released with a Blood Sugar level of 288. I was told again to contact the VA immediately to be seen by my primary care doc. I did this and was told they would not be able to see me until next Thursday (the 16th) and not to worry about the nausea, hangover feeling, dizziness, shortness of breath and added fatigue. I started Glucophage yesterday and my Blood Sugar has not dropped below 244 while on this med, in fact most of last night and this morning I've been in the 300's and feeling worse if anything. I guess my question is has anyone else had to battle Diabetes with Fibro and any advice on whether or not I should go back to the ER would be helpful. Thanks.

I don't have diabetes, but my mom and siblings do. If you can, relax. Stress hormones, like cortisol, can cause blood sugar to rise. No exercising (with fibro?) when your levels are above 300, especially if you are showing ketones in your urine. Are you testing for ketones? You pee on a test strip. You can get them at a drug store without a prescription. (Send someone else!) Monitoring your ketones can also help your primary choose the best meds to manage your blood sugars. Drink LOTS of water to help your body flush the glucose. As far as when to go to the ER, if you're scared, go. You've just been handed a significant diagnosis and it sounds like you didn't get much patient education. In the meantime, rest, relax and drink lots of water. I know how stressful it can be to have few answers. I hope you have someone with you who cares.

Thanks for the information and reply. You're correct in that I haven't received much information. In fact my wife and I have both asked the docs at the ER and VA for information regarding diabetes and what I can do before I'm seen by a specialist to help ease some of the symptoms. Having fibro and now diabetes I don't think I've ever felt sicker. The ER docs/employees just told us that I would have to see my primary care for more instruction. My primary care (VA) says that they need to see me before giving me more info. It's been pretty scary this week with limited information and feeling so horrible. Basically I'll just have to feel like this until I get seen at the end of next week, seems like a lifetime away at the moment. Anyway, thank you for the information you've provided.
