I am interested to hear if any of you have ever addressed your pain issues with the help of a chiropractor/osteopath/masseur? Or have you tried any other type of alternative therapy to manipulate your muscles and bones?
I have tried it all, with varying results. All I can say is that I would never let anybody crack my spine again.

I have heard wonders about chiropractors, I'd love to try it in the future, but I had an awful experience wen I was younger. I was treated by a wannabe chiropractor when I was 13. Oh boy... did it hurt! I'm afraid to say it, but maybe that stupid idiot hurt me more than I want to admit and triggered my fibro. Next day I had a swollen lymph node on my jaw... Next time I go for it I'll check the credentials of the guy carefully!

That sounds really traumatic, Trellum. I could tell you some horror stories, too. But I don't want to do that here, as someone reading my words might be put off from seeking out the help of an experienced chiropractor who could make a big difference in his or her life.
Personally, I prefer osteopathy the way it is being taught in Europe. It requires a high degree of anatomical knowledge and focuses on muscle therapy to gently persuade displaced vertebras to slip back into their natural position. Also a qualified osteopath can help you with every other conceivable problem. Mine adjusted the muscles in my belly when I had food poisoning and was all cramped up. I felt better within a couple of hours.

I started going to a chiropractor shortly before being diagnosed. He took X-rays of my entire spine... Something that my primary physician didn't do and found on the images that my cervical spine is actually curved in the opposite direction that it should be. It is most likely a result of a hit and run/ rear end collision I had in 1997.
Most likely this played a crucial role in my Fibromyalgia.
He adjusts my atlas (neck & cervical spine) to try and get everything in line as much as possible. It does help with my neck pain somewhat although I have to make visits part of my routine or I'm back in the same shape as before.
I must tell you that the hydro bed is a welcome treat though! ;0)

We have a local chiropractor that specializes in fibromyalgia, and I am going to see him next month. I will report back.

I have a wonderful chiropractor who doesn't "crack bones". He's very gentle and does the adjustments very carefully. I rely on him and also my acupuncturist and massage therapist. They do provide me relief.

Chiropractic wasn't a help except for the wonderful vibrating water bed. The warmth and gentle massage made my day.

I have tried and tried using a chiropractor, but can't seem to get any relief from the manipulations. Granted, most of the time he has to "drop" by right hip, but afterwards, I feel worse than when I got there. And the neck twist they use always scares me to death. I'm afraid it is going to paralyze me one time. I haven't given up yet, but I know the key is to keep going and you really need to go at least 3 times a week.

My family member with fibromyalgia has actually gained a fair amount of relief from visiting her osteopath, but then I do know of other people who've had no relief at all. What I always say is that it is a great idea to go for it and see what happens - because the best that can happen is that you get some relief, and the worst that can happen, usually, is that your symptoms remain the same, so you honestly have nothing to lose. If it was me, I would go for anything that was an option, in the hope that it would help!

I tried a chiropractor for my chronic pain very recently. I had tried one years ago and had not liked it.
A doctor suggested it again. Reluctantly, I went. I liked the chiropractor when I first met him. I experienced significant pain relief the first trip.
But I had asked him not to touch my neck (it is very sensitive and seems to REALLY hurt when they crack it).
I forgot to ask him not to crack my neck when I went the 2nd time.
He did crack my neck. I ended up in severe pain following that (I had a lot of neck injuries long ago, and it doesn't feel good when they mess with my neck). Chiropractic is definitely not for me.
Massage (especially trigger point massage) gives me significant pain relief, an ability to talk the ear off someone (very therapeutic), and enhances my mood. Thanks for listening!

I've tried osteopathy and let me tell you that I love it because we can solve in a matter of minutes pains that could stick with us for a long time.

Hi Gadaregil, I was wondering if you have an update on this as I went to a chiropractor today and he said the same thing about my cervical spine is straight rather then curved and causing my head to sit 2.3 cm forward. He has set me up on a 3 times a week program and thinks he can have me back to work in a few months to a year? The adjustment today was very painful and three times a week will be very expensive, I want to know that this does help and since it looks like this message is a few months old I was hoping you could provide some feedback! Wishing everyone a better day :)

I had frequent chiropractic adjustments for 10 years for headaches in my 20s, before I started having FM symptoms. After a car accident and going to massage and acupuncture to help, I went in for a chiro adjustment and I lost all of the pain relief I had gained in 2 months working with the other two. It has now been 10 years since I saw a chiro.

I recently had 3 appts with an osteopath - first I have heard of them - for back pain and inability to breath in the middle of the night.

I will add, I am dying to get in to a massage therapist. I had PT for awhile a few years ago and she would separate the layers of tissue (called "fascia release" in my arms and back. It KILLED having it done, but I felt like a million bucks afterwards. I am dying to have that done again.
