Hello, everyone...I have a question about my pain meds. I have been taking Cymbalta and Tramadol for pain (I'm allergic to Neurontin). The Tramadol seemed to really help at first, but after a year plus of taking it, it doesn't seem to be as effective anymore. My GP seems apprehensive to prescribe anything stronger, and he has referred me to a Rheumatologist. And in the state where I live, there are only 3. When I see her in a few weeks, how should I address my concerns with the medication? Does anyone have any advice as to how I can discuss the issue with her? Also, is there another medication that could potentially help more with the pain or should I let her make the suggestion?

You need to see a pain management doctor

Do I need a referral for a Pain Mgmt Doctor? Will a Rheumatologist not prescribe anything else for pain? And does a Pain Mgmt Facility take insurance?

Turtle,
I'm so happy that you are getting into see a rheumatologist. :) I think that if you share with this new dr what you just shared with us, they should be able to prescribe something for you. If they don't prescribe pain meds (I don't see why not), then ask that dr for a referral to a pain specialist. Dr. Carolyn Felton just moved back to Georgia or Alabama. I can't remember which really. She was my dr for a short time and was very impressive. See if one of the drs in your area is her.
Anyway, best of luck with your new rheumy and in finding the pain meds that work for you. I take Neurontin for pain so I'm sorry I cannot make any suggestions.

Turtle, btw, Dr. Felton is a rheumatologist.

Thank you so, so much Cheryl Ann. This has been an extremely difficult road thus far. I am relieved at the fact that I get to see a Rheumatologist. I see so many people on here who seem to struggle with getting any help. I have witnessed first hand how unempathetic doctors can be...I've actually had them laugh at me. Thanks for the doctor referral and the kind words. I will keep praying and hope for the best with the Specialist Appt...I'll also keep you in my prayers, Cheryl Ann. God Bless ♡

Thank you Turtle and you are in my prayers as well :)

Depends on your insurance. Mine didn't require a referral and yes my ins did cover it. Rys can also prescribe but in my case I feel that pain docs will get you the strong stuff you need as that's their specialty. Good Luck
