Hi i am new to this forum and only diagnosed 2024 after many years of suffering .Has anyone had experience of the best type of mattress to help with night time pain.

Good evening,
Regarding beds/mattresses: I have gone back and forth from firm to soft to medium mattresses, but my best solution came two years ago when I purchased a bed that mechanically moves into different positions for the head, torso, and legs.

What I discovered was that it wasn’t so much about the firmness of the mattress as it is the ability to gently move into different positions as one particular part of the body begins to hurt.

I have found that simply by shifting the weight off the part of my body that is hurting the most, I am able to get relief. Sometimes just moving a portion of the bed a few inches helps tremendously.

Since I’m also an insomniac, my body tends to stiffen at night because I’m not getting restful sleep, so changing positions allows different parts of my body to rest because I’m moving the pressure points around.

I also have a difficult time breathing, so one of the best features is being able to move the head of my bed up and down to provide better positions for breathing easily.

One extra feature that came with my bed are LED lights that shine from under my bed. They are managed by the same remote control as the rest of my bed. It’s wonderful for lighting my floor so that I don’t trip on something in my bedroom. For some of us, clumsiness sets in early and we have to be careful not to fall when we have to move around at night.

The best kind of mattress is the one that works the best for you. The thing is, everyone with fibromyalgia is different when it comes to what works for them and what does not, when it comes to medictions and exercise and everything else including mattresses. For some, it's a firm mattress and for others it's a soft one, so unfortunately no one can tell you what the best mattress is for you. You will have to experiment and find out.

....BUT..... we can tell you what works for each of us, and that at least gives you some ideas to try!

I have a fairly firm mattress, but the comfort of it is greatly enhanced for me by the 2" memory foam topper I put on top of it. I love my memory foam, and when it wears out I have decided that I will get a 3" topper to replace it. One great thing about these toppers is that they don't cost nearly what a new mattress costs, and so it's a lot easier to try it out to see if it helps your comfort.

The other thing I find is necessary is whatever helps me to relax at bedtime. For me, that is a combination of a muscle relaxant, and alternatively the use of medical cannabis.

I also occasionally have issues breathing when laying flat... for now I move out to a recliner to get my head above the rest of my body. Getting an adjustable bed is in my future, as soon as I can afford the $.... anyone know if insurance will help purchase such a bed?

It depends on your insurance company and coverage. Best way to find out is to call your insurance company and ask them.

Hi Sunkacola what is medical CBD and where do you purchase? Also how is it taken? Thanks 🤩 Nan

@Nan I don't think I mentioned "medical CBD" because I don't know that there is such a thing. CBD is CBD. It can be purchased in a lot of places, including online, but one needs to be very careful when buying it online because there are a lot of scams out there and you have no way of knowing if you are only spending all that money for plain coconut oil. Best to buy locally. In the UK my understanding is that CBD can be sold as a food supplement. It is usually sold as a tincture that you take sub-lingually.

Medical cannabis, on the other hand, is only legal in some places in the US and not legal at all in the UK.

I have found that CBD alone does nothing for me, but combined with THC it is effective. However, in your case you will only be ab le to get CBD with no THC. Some people do report good effect from that, though, so I hope it works for you.

Hi, This statement is not to present an argument. No negativity at all. I’m not a medically trained person. I don’t know how different Magnesium Glycinate is, but it is the form that I take for help with sleep and other issues. I find that it helps. Just a suggestion to those still trying to figure it all out. All the best, BHB

May I inquire as to what muscle relaxant you use? I have found that even with a small sip of alcohol, my muscles will relax too fast and I end up with spasms. The marijuana is not a problem. It's legal where I live.

I got mine quite a few years ago from Walmart (under $200.) I haven't had any issues with it. Knock on wood!! It's just the bed frame. You put what mattress you want on it.

I use a prescription muscle relaxant called Baclofen. Combined with 2 Advil it is helpful to me for my back pain at times, and also sometimes I take it at bedtime.
Marijuana, especially if combined with CBD and CBG can also help to relax at bedtime.
