Good morning everyone! I keep meaning to post this so that everyone may consider this for themselves. In the last few months I started taking quite a few supplements to see if it will help with the pain I experience every day.
I went to my rheumatologist a few months ago and it was an extremely disappointing and frustrating! I absolutely loved my rheumatologist until the last appointment. I’m not sure what changed or why he flipped and became ugly, but I was extremely hurt by it. I was literally crying in his office due to the pain and his response was to go onto an app for mental well being and take ashwaganda.
I left his office, called to find myself a new rheumatologist and looked into supplements that may help. So here we go, this is what I have found that helps me, and may help you. I got so tired of taking an excessive amount of medication, so now I’m down to pregablin 450 mg daily (lyrica) for pain and the following supplements. I also take them all as gummies since I struggle to swallow pills.
1. Multivitamin
2. Biotin
3. Magnesium
4. Nerve and joint pain gummy (found at Walmart)
5. Glucosamine
6. Tumeric
7. Zinc
8. Vitamin C
9. Vitamin D
I know this isn’t cheap, but my pain has significantly reduced and I can literally walk up my stairs without a significant amount of pain in my knees.
Please feel free to ask any questions, I’m happy to provide the brands I’ve been using and the milligrams as well.
If we aren’t advocates for ourselves, then how can things get better? I was extremely hurt being dismissed by my rheumatologist and told it’s all in my head, especially when he was such an advocate for the last year! Well, I do know it’s in my head but not the way he said. The pain we experience is real and it is a part of the brain that doesn’t signal correctly anymore. I get it, and telling me I have to train my brain to tolerate the pain seems crazy. This is obviously coming from someone that doesn’t live with pain everyday!
 
Some of these I already use. The remainder I have already tried for myself but without success. We're all different, obviously, so for anyone who follows this advice from the OP, I highly recommend trying one of the listed supplements at a time, give it a month or two to see if it helps, then continue using it if it does or stop taking it if it doesn't.

It's important to only take one new supplement at a time and always start at the minimum dose and work upward to the maximum. Stop there whenever you find the dose that starts working for you.

No sense in wasting money on supplements that don't help you, and also it can be dangerous to take some supplements that you don't need. Some of them can be dangerous and toxic at high levels.

Thank you for responding! I had the gastric sleeve a little less than a year ago, so some of these supplements are for that and I have migraines as well, so some are for that as well. They all seem to work well together for me for the most part and of course everyone has different experiences with different supplements. I slowly added each supplement until I’ve gotten to what I take now, and indeed it can be pricey but I’m trying anything to alleviate the pain I have, even if it is a little bit. At a point I was taking so many pills that were just thrown at me and I trusted what my doctors were giving me, but now I am trying to help myself to some degree without all of the chemicals.

I'm currently trying ginger supplements along with the usual Psyllium Husk fibre and Dulce seaweed. Hopefully there will be some benefit, @thparker13 great to hear of your results.
 
@Badger What benefits does ginger potentially offer? It's not a supplement I have tried or considered.
 
From what I just read it helps with inflammation and FM symptoms. Might be something to consider. I know it’s good for digestion and upset stomach as well.
 
I have made and used a ginger tincture (really easy to make) for nausea, and have found that it often helps with that. For me, that's the only thing that it helps....has no effect on pain, inflammation, or anything else.

This is what made my mind up to try it. I may have to get a capsule in future, the tablet can aggravate my acid reflux a bit.
 
Oh I hear that! Prior to me getting my hiatal hernia and esophageal linx to stop my acid reflux, water used to give me acid reflux! It was out of control!
 
@thparker13 and @Badger I have my acid reflux ( from hiatus hernia) mostly controlled by reducing\eliminating foods and drinks that can aggravate it, and switching to lansoprazole ( I take necessary meds that my stomach needs the extra protection).

Have either of you found a sudden hatred of previously tolerated foods? Last few months I cant stand the taste of ground coffee ( I stick to decaff) and also tomatoes,which I could eat on occasions in small quantities. Even the smell of these make me recoil. Whilst these are things I can do without I dont want really to start reducing a restricted diet even further if possible.

Since having the gastric sleeve, I have found many things repulsive now and honestly I eat ketovore/carnivore now. It’s pretty rare when I eat anything outside of an animal product now. On occasion I’ll eat popcorn, or have sugar free chocolate truffles (I make myself), but outside of that I haven’t really eaten anything else. Shoot, even chicken at times makes me nauseous.
I’m guessing my reaction to food though is more associated to my gastric sleeve more than anything else.
Prior to it though, I had issues with food in general due to acid reflux and medication.
I do know however that your taste buds change every 7 years, so maybe that is what has happened most recently. Just a thought.
 
I've found in the past few years I get a strong reaction to mashed potato now as well as baked beans. Sometimes beans are not so bad, or different types of bean, but otherwise have cut out mash and baked beans because of the awful feeling that lasts for hours.
 
@SBee for me, it's high carb foods, especially breads, bakery foods, sugars and pasta. Thus, I live a liberal low carb/keto lifestyle.
 
@thparker13 I have not come across the notion taste buds alter every 7 years before. I'm interested in that. Its odd how much your own food needs have altered following your gastric band, but the list of vitamins and supplements seem comprehensive. And yet again, prior to this you also needed a restrictive diet due to acid reflux. I've been doing so for so many years its kind of instinctive now. Just throws me when something new aggravates my diet.

@Badger yes, its a strong reaction I get now too. I did wonder if my problem may be tomatoes and coffee are generally quite acidic anyway for me and used to set off the reflux. Many people suggest potatoes set off inflammation, yet one GP said they were good for inflammation! Thats a nice bit of contradiction 🙄 Mostly I use sweet potatoes now hoping I am hitting a good balance...

@JamieMarc I confess to being a lover of carbs. Whilst I tend to avoid anything over processed carbs and me are friends I think.

In general I tend to listen to my body as regards to foods. If I suddenly find a food repulsive, obviously I avoid it, but if I crave a food ( often for me its green veggies) then I up my intake. Thankfully despite not going near ground coffee anymore I still adore a good decaff instant. I feel I would be hell to live with it I couldn't have that each morning.

Hello there. I almost cried reading your story. I too try to take supplements to help me along. Have you tried Turmeric?
