I suffer from this terrible muscle pain for more than 2 years. I told my gp and he told me it is all in my head. I sleep continuously, I can't touch my skin or massage my muscles. I had some blood tests , but my gp told me everything is OK. My father died from fibromialgia 12 years ago, and he was diagnosed in Austria. I live in England and I am desperate to be treated and diagnosed properly. What do I need to do?

Hi there. I would say the first thing you need to do is fine yourself a doctor who will not tell you it's all in your head. If you are feeling terrible pain, you are not making this up. Many doctors refuse to believe that FM exists, and prefer (especially if you are female) to tell you that it's not real. We know it is.

Without finding a doctor that will listen to you and believe you, you won't get a diagnosis. You cannot diagnose what is going wrong just from a few blood tests. You need to be tested for all of the things that could possibly be causing this, and there are many of those things. All of those need to be eliminated before the diagnosis of FM, because some of those other things can look like FM but have different treatment and outcomes. Start with a new doctor.

About your father.....I have not ever heard of FM being fatal. Can you say more about this?

Hey there,

I'm sorry to hear that. Yes, it could be fibro, but it could also be a million other things! What you should know is that fibro/MPS/CFS are mostly exclusionary diagnoses, meaning they're stated once everything else has been ruled out. Even the "tender-points" diagnosis is heaviliy flawed and many doctors don't rely upon it any longer.

Of course it's very real though!! There is however a difference between somatic pain and fibro pain, I suggest you read up on that.

Countless doctors are not familiar with diagnosing and correctly classifying symptoms associated with fibro, hence it's usually a LOOOOONGGGG road from first symptoms to diagnosis. And a just a blood test is well, the tip of the iceberg.

You're probably gonna have to go to various specialists, such as orthopedists, rheumatologists, cardiologists, neurologists, etc... in order to rule out several diseases.

It took me about 43 doctors to arrive at the diagnosis of fibro and myofascial pain syndrome. So hang in there, don't think the worst and let us know how we may help.
