Too good to be true?

Hey guys! The last quarter of the school year is always the most chaotic, so I haven't had time to think much about this until now. I'm hoping you guys can help me understand some thing.

Back in April, I saw a specialist on fibro for the first time. My neuro set this up, as a last step to verifying my diagnosis. One of the things the specialist recommended was a steroid shot in my hip, because it's my most constant source of pain, and limits my ability to move. She stated that I wouldn't suffer from side-effects, and that I'd likely no longer need to be treated for my hip again. I declined, saying that I need time to think about this.

It sounds too good to be true. Have any of you gotten a steroid shot for joint pain? Did it help? Were there any side effects? How long did it last? Should I try it?

Hi there! I haven't gotten one personally, but my mom has. She got her in her knee, she said it hurt so bad! She almost cried, but she was pain free for 6 months! After that time she was told by the doctor she needed another one, because the pain had come back. I hope you end up taking the right decision for you Wish I could help more.

I've had steroid shots numerous times, in my lumbar and cervical areas. I believe I also got one in my shoulder area, but it's been a while, so I can't remember. I know it was discussed. I have received relief from the injections, and I would still get them periodically, if I could afford to do so.

One thing to keep in mind is that it is a surgical procedure...at least when done properly, and she will need to be sedated, and driven home afterwards, assuming she chooses to go ahead with the procedure. If she's in that much pain, I say go for it, and see if it works. If it does, she can have it done again in the future. I wouldn't do it every 6 months, but I have noticed a gradual increase in my pain after a year, a year and a half, and even longer, so I think some of the effects are more longlasting than I had originally thought. Also, after getting the steroid injections, I experience what I call 'roid rage. I don't know if it's the same as the 'roid rage that's mentioned in the news, but the steroids seem to really amp up my hormones and I'm very touchy for about 3 days afterwards, so I tend to isolate during that period, so I don't take that out on anyone.

I had bursitis and had cortisone injections in both hips. I had success for a month or so and I am now having pain in my hips again. My pain specialist told me if it fibro it wont help but if it bursitis it would.......I have also had cortisone injections in my right foot for two neuromas. It has been a week and it is still hurting. The neuroma is not as big but it is still there. I would say if there is a chance to take away some pain away I would go for it.

I had it once. And that night, I cried because of terrible pain. My whole body felt burning and ache all over. The pain last after one week. Maybe, it does not work on me but work on other persons.

Well, if it sound too good to be true, most likely it won't last long, but we should enjoy it while it lasts.

Oy, it sounds like it's a bigger risk than I'm willing to take :-(

Hmmm. Everyone is diffrent .it might work great for u.so your in pain now .if it don't work u have lost nothing . If it does work then u can have pain free days .thats something we would all ,love .

That's why it's so important to try and see what works for us as sadly there is not a working formula for everyone just yet.

If it's just a shot I think I would try it. If it requires anesthesia that's a hole other game.

If it decreases your pain dramatically and your not running it strait thru the liver I would probably give it a go. But it's your body.

Me, they have suggested a steroid epidural, a lot of risk involved and costly. Just like any meds you take you have to way out the risk vs reward.

While I've never gotten steroid injections personally, I have several family members that have gotten them. Most have them got relief from it for anywhere from a week to a month but then ended up with the pain back again. Some of them didn't get any relief from it at all. I've also had family members that have gotten nerve blocking injections and they had similar results with those. My mom swears that she would never get any injections done again before they weren't worth the pain of getting them. But, of course, doctors wouldn't say they worked if at least some people didn't get relief from them. I would say that it's worth giving it a try, then you can at least say that it either worked or didn't work for you.

My mother had the steroid injections when she went back for a lung treatment checkup. I don't know why the doctor recommended it, because it was one trip that I didn't make with her (one of my other sisters went). What she remarked to me was that she didn't think it helped very much at all, and as a side effect, her face and neck swelled. Was that fluid? It took about a month for the side effects to go away. She wasn't very satisfied with that treatment, and to her the results didn't seem worth the side effects alone.

Steroid shots won't work for fibro pain as it has no cause. If its an inflammation based cause like bursitis it might help....but there are no guarantees and side affects of thinning tissue in the area so although unlikely with one shot could potentially make things worse long term.

I was offered steroid injection for my shoulder /arm pain when it started as the consultant guessed at me having a frozen shoulder....turns out was fibro.
