Hello everyone,

I am so happy to have found your forum. After 2 and 1/2 years of tests and visits to specialists for chronic pain, I have finally been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I still feel in limbo, however, because my pain is unilateral (shoulder, chest, back, hip, flank, glute, leg ... but only right side). I also do not really suffer from a fibro fog or fatigue ... just constant pain.

It is important for me to understand my diagnosis so that I can accept and make peace in my own way. I feel that this diagnosis was just slapped on me because my family doctor does not know how else to label this pain. Also, I am interested in trying Dr. St. Amand's diet for fibro, but it is a difficult diet and not something recommended if you do not have fibro. I do not want to embark on an unnecessary diet if my diagnosis is not correct.

If there is anyone out there with unilateral/one-sided fibro, I would be delighted to connect with you. If anyone has further thoughts on my question, I would be so happy to hear from you too. I really feel alone and confused.

Thank you so much, my friends,
Jenny

Hi Jenny, The fact is that fibromyalgia does feel like a diagnosis slapped on because the doctor(s) don't know what else to call it. that's just the reality of fibro. After you have testes for everything else it could be and it isn't those, then they call it fibro. I myself think that in time this diagnosis will be broken down into different diagnoses, but who knows. It won't be any time soon, in any case, because it's not something that very many researchers are even studying right now. Don't know much about the unilateral part; most I know have pain on both sides. But that doesn't mean that you don't have an unusual form of fibro.

I would not recommend trying a "diet for fibro" if as you say it is not recommended for people without fibro. If it's not recommended for people without fibro, then I doubt it is a generally healthy diet, and since there's no one diet that has been proven to be effective for the majority of people with fibro, I'd stay away from any diet that claims it is.

The best diet is simply to heat as completely healthfully as possible rather than following any specific diet plan. See suggestions and advice for this and other life choices you can make in the post that is pinned to the top of the general forum. Best of luck to you!

Thank you so much for your reply. I really appreciate your time and kindness in answering

My pain is mostly on my left side but sometimes my right side joins in. I went to alternative doctors about 6 years (would still be going if I could afford) and they had me change my diet. I also have hasimotos so no root vegetables as well. So it's kind of Paleo, no grains (which cause cancer) no sugar (who needs it with agave, Stevie, etc?) I cut out any foods that cause a flair up. At first you think, what can I eat? You'd be amazed at the delicious recipes. I find that since I changed the way I eat i don't need as many pills. I'm down to using occasional low dose pain medicine, my homemade pain lotion and pot.
Stay away from as many medications as you can because they cause other problems. Stretching helps as well. I still have God awful flair ups but
the flair uos are shorter,, life is better. I know I'm lucky because I can grow and process all my food so it's safe from chemicals. I hope you can all find things that help your pain.
I try not to let it get to me by staying positive but we are all going to have bad days so hang in there!
I'm 68 and aging is hard enough add fibro, ugh.

Hi ☺️👋. I'm also new here, but I have been diagnosed with fibro for 18 months. There are times when my fibro "flares" up and it's only on one side. (Currently it's on my right side) Usually my flare ups are on both sides though.

My pain is mostly left sided, occasionally both sides. I was diagnosed during covid and feel like it was dumped on mecalso but I understand fibromyalgia has so many facets to it. Its a learning curve luckily I know and work with lots of folk with it and family members so I can learn from them x
