First off let me just say hello, I'm very glad I found this forum.

My fiance has been recently diagnosed with Fibromyalgia; and from what he says and I can see it is rather severe. His condition started several years ago after a car incident which damaged both of his wrists. He has had surgery on one of them and tells me it has caused him pain every day since.

Describes it to me as if " someone stabbed him in the wrist with a knife and then he has to go about his day".

After the surgery he went to many many doctors and specialists trying to find out why he was still in pain; of course with no answers or help.Everyone telling him it was just in his head, just a sprain or kink.

As the years progressed other parts of his body began bother him. Currently he experiences daily pain in his:

-wrists
-cervical spine
-hips
-knees
-ankles

In addition to being in some much pain my finance has also been experiencing short term memory loss, mood swings, depression and extreme fatigue.

He has become unreasonable, rude and temperamental. Definitely not himself by any means.

He is on Lyrica and a few herbal supplements for energy, anti-inflammation and his mood. There are also the pain killers at night to help him sleep. However its no way to live.

Basically I am at a loss. I have been researching the condition, trying to help him find specialist and medications. Support groups and ways of coping with all of this. Some days he just doesnt want to hear any of it. Some days he just wants to be angry and take it out on everyone.

All of this is so new and terrifying...so many questions and worries about the future. It has been exhausting.

I guess to sum up I'm looking for support, some answers and maybe a little hope.

Thank you to everyone who reads this :)

I also wanted to ask if all of this is normal? Is the mood swings and aggression part of it ? Or is that just because this is new and he is coping?

redsky,
Hello and welcome to the forum. Yes, anger can be a part of fibro or any disease or injury because of the life changing effects it has on ones body. Most people go through the different stages of grief until they accept what is happening and then try to start a management program. Also depression plays a huge role in illness, and it sounds like your friend could use the help of a good therapist who could take the time to listen and also teach him stress and relation, coping skills. If he is really angry a treatment called EMDR may be of help to him. Also bio-feedback is of some benefit to some people. I would start by doing a web search in your area for therapists and that way you can read about their practice and see what mental health treatments they can provide. If he will try this I think it could make a big improvement in his mental state, as well as, help with his physical problems.

Also I encourage you to read through the posts on the forum under pain and alternative methods, and in the general section and new diagnosis section for some good coping skills offered by other members. Be sure to check out the off-topic and know you can vent your own frustrations if you feel the need. We try and answer all questions and also be supportive of all members whether you have fibro or not.

Please feel free to post answers and ask any questions you might have. I hope you will visit often and I am glad you found this forum. :)
