Default Fibro can worsen pain from other causes

National Institutes of Health are doing studies regarding how our bodies process pain. "Research suggests that fibromyalgia is caused by a problem in how the body processes pain, or more precisely, a hypersensitivity to stimuli that normally are not painful. Therefore, several NIH-supported researchers are focusing on ways the body processes pain to better understand why people with fibromyalgia have increased pain sensitivity." This increased sensitivity extends to surgeries, stubbed toes, arthritis, etc.
This doesn't help my pain, but it does explain to me why all pain seems worse than ever.

That is very interesting. I have seen articles that suggest that our nerves get hypersensitivity and that in turn causes the muscle pain. But how far that goes toward all the other symptoms that can crop up with fibro does not seem to answer all the questions surrounding it. It almost seems like it is some type of virus or viral infection that weakens our immune system in a different way then say lupus does. We are stuck in a limbo of pain and brain fog, fatigue and muscle weakness, and yet it is hidden from the naked eye, as well as, all the test results.

I watched that video that Kevin put up that talks about fibro being introduced in certain areas of the country like Quebec, Canada and in Florida, and areas around the world, and then spread by some unknown means all over the US and the world. Makes you wonder if it was invented and purposely put out in the public to cause wide spread pain and cut the work force and other livelyhoods.

This makes good forum spectulation and something to think about. Like where were you when you first got sick. I was living and working in SW Florida. I was working on a wildlife farm.

What say you?

I think that genetics may be involved. My father suffered from this for years. As to where I was when I got it, that is hard to tell as I can't pin point when it started.

Ginger,
Go into the first topic section "General Disseussions About Fibromyalgia." Look for the "Question from an aspiring novelist" by Kevin.
The video is pretty long but I found the information to make it worth watching. Let me know what you think about it?

Anything is possible.

I think the efforts to limit fibromyalgia to hypersensitive nerves could be an effort to deny people adequate pain control. "Hypersensitivity" sounds much less urgent than "writhing intractable pain".

The same maneuver was used during my childbearing years. Birthing classes used the word "discomfort" for "pain and "contractions" instead of "pains". Their reasoning was that using different words would make the experience less traumatic and "painful".

I really don' t like the medical community's attempts to manipulate the way patients experience their conditions by changing terms used to describe the experience. We need to be careful when given an alternate reality. Don't get "talked out of" reasonable care and adequate pain relief!

Sounds like an interesting study. Yes it does make other types of pain more painful as well. I think that is why my Migraines have gotten more intense over the years too.

I have a hard time believing it was created. It is more believable that it is genetic and has been around for a longer time than we have had a name for it. Having worked in the medical field in the past and having studied genetics, this makes a lot more sense to me. Also, exactly how would one design a condition that is not viral, bacterial, or fungal? More importantly, how would one introduce it to the public when it is not any of those forms?

I lived in California, when I developed fibromyalgia. It certainly happens in MANY more places than was listed.

I guess sometimes knowledge can be the best medicine. Not knowing is worse than knowing. Knowing might not be a cure, but it is information. A step in the right direction. Pain is a difficult thing, and to experience it so much more severely is, as well. Understanding the pain is good for the mind and the soul. Perhaps, in a way good for the body, too.

I'm not sure that I have fibromyalgia, but I have been doing research (after years of doctors not helping) and think it may be it. I had some of the symptoms before I had children, but the pain is 10x worse since carrying 2 babies.

Dear Jabeen, I am sending you my sympathy. I do not know the medical resources you may have. If you lived in the states, I would tell you to find a better rheumatologist. I have friends with fibro who are trying to be the best mother they can be as they struggle with fibro. It is very hard for them. I am in the "grandchildren" years of my life and don't have to struggle with the demands of children every day. Please let us know how you are doing. Have you joined the thread about dealing with frustration? I find it a good and supportive place.

Interesting thread. I was in South Florida as well when I was diagnosed, but on the Atlantic side, working as an Oncology RN. However, I had symptoms for many years in Oklahoma, prior to the move to Florida. And a family history of auto-immune problems.

MercyL, you kinda made me giggle a little! Not because it's funny but because I can so relate to your comments. I tend to get a little "Hypersensitive" especially while in "writhing-intractable-pain". You are spot on with the word play that sometimes is put into use.

MercyL and Breeze, you're so right about how words can trivialize the pain and marginalize those who suffer the pain as "wimps" or "cry babies." Even the name "chronic fatigue syndrome" sounds like it just means you're middle aged and too pooped at the end of the work day to party till midnight. We need a word more like "Blasted by an asteroid, then annihilated by a nuclear bomb, then drowned until bloated, then run over by a steamroller and then still expected to get out of bed and function like nothing's wrong Syndrome."

Corvid, Don't forget getting hit by a freight train just before the elephants stampeded over us, then get out of bed like nothing ever happened. Feel like that and yours, every morning, but pretend like nothing's wrong. then add the Symdrome somewhere's after that. lol
