I am a 55 year old female who had a hysterectomy 3 years ago (I still have one ovary). Since September 2015:

* 3 level acdf Sept. 2015 with routine recovery
* Soon after acdf, started having non-specific but severe tooth pain in my upper left molars. Dental xrays were normal. Tap test was not painful. Seemed to flare when barometric pressure soared upwards quickly.
* Went to family doc to see what could be causing it and he gave me Imitrex, thinking it could be some form of migraine.
* Two weeks after this, I did get an abscessed tooth on the lower left molar. Started Keflex (I am allergic to nearly all other antibiotics) and Tylenol 3. Took two visits totalling over 4 1/2 hours to perform root canal. After second visit, I experienced terrible jaw pain and was told it was trismus and would go away. Jaw would not open very far. One month later, my jaw is still stiff and limited but no pain. However, my upper and lower molars are killing me again.
* Also since the root canal I have had several intermittent days where my whole body was in pain, even to touch. I could not do anything but lie on the couch all day. I have trouble staying warm and shiver a lot. I get up 3 to 4 times a night to urinate. It feels like my IBS is coming back after years of no symptoms.

Generally, I feel horrible all over. My teeth Xrays are fine. The Imitrex has stopped working for the "migraine" in my upper molars. Some days I feel great, others I feel like I can't move and can't stay warm. I am depressed for no reason. I have nothing particularly stressful in my life right now...other than the pain affecting my life and activities. All of this began after my acdf. Ironically, I have no pain in my neck where the surgery was done.

I cannot go back to the dentist yet again. I think they thought the root canal would take care of everything.

Is it possible this is FM?? If it is possible, where do I go from here? Back to my family doctor? I do not need referrals to see specialists. I just want to know what is causing all this pain and toothaches and depression and chills and not sleeping due to getting up to urinate so often. I just retired and want to enjoy life with my husband, not be in pain all the time. Thanks for listening. I have no one else to ask about this.

I forgot to mention increasing nausea and dizziness, feeling like I am going to pass out. 8 years ago I went through a period of severe nausea that lasted a couple of years. I lost 63 pounds. When the nausea subsided, I did gain some weight back but not nearly all of it. I was monitored by my family doctor during that time and all blood work was always normal. I have all my physicals every year....OBGYN, bloodwork, annual exam with family doctor, mammogram, and a colonoscopy every 3 years as colon cancer runs in my family. I have had no serious health issues. I take a small dose of BP meds daily, synthroid, omeprazole, B12, sage, Claritan in allergy season and a probiotic. (I developed multiple food allergies 1 1/2 years ago after a round of antibiotics destroyed my stomach. All but one or two allergies have gone away.)

I also suffer from teeth afflictions and I can assure you that we are in the same boat especially during the cold season. The difficulty in your case arises from the fact that infections could be the predisposing factors behind your pain. Since FM is a syndrome, you would require to undergo more tests to zero in on the condition. The crux of the matter is that there could be a primary pain due to the FM and a secondary pain due to FM. Best regards.

I know nothing about acdf, but is it possible you could be getting any type of referred pain? Did they take a pan scan of your mouth/jaw?

I have had zero luck with root canals on the upper palate, every one of them failed for one reason of another. After years of attempting them,
one dentist did a pan xray (because I wanted implants) and found that my sinuses were basically lying right on top of the palate. So that may explain all the infections I had. Also there is research that says root canals can still harbor bacteria.

Finally the last attempt at root canal, no matter how many times they kept cleaning out the tooth and treating it for infection, I was getting horrible pain. Like a knife going through my head for weeks. Eventually all my teeth hurt, but only on the side of my mouth with the root canal. Turned out after I went to an endo, that I was getting referred pain from a lower molar; root wrapped around trigeminal nerve (believe me, you NEVER want to have that happen). If you are getting pain in all your molars though, you definitely want to rule that out!

So there could be many reasons, including maybe TMJ and or/fibro as well. If you can see specialist, I would get a second opinion on the dental and medical.

Sorry for all your pain.

I would suspect lingering infection in the molars, causing inflammation, which is giving the Fibro something to react to, and also, given the barometric pressure situation -- sinus issues.

I get periodic pain in one of my crowns, that has never gone away. I have a few remedies. Crush a garlic clove and hold against the painful areas for several minutes. (Be warned. It's SPICY). Swish with colloidal silver several times a day. Use the coconut "oil pulling" method. These strategies can help to kill off any infection it can get to, and reduce inflammation in the mouth. Oil of Oregano is also a time honored remedy for a sore tooth.

I would also consider doing regular sinus rinses. I use the squeeze bottle. Distilled water is best, but I generally use tap water. I put it in an oversized coffee cup with a saucer on the top, and also rinse out the squeeze bottle and put a bit of water in it and leave the cap on it, but loose, and microwave the whole lot of it for 7 minutes. I do this because -- very rarely -- there is a dangerous amoeba that can get in the water that can kill you, so I take sterilization very seriously when I shoot things up my nose. I sometimes add a bit of MSM before I sterlize. And, sometimes add colloidal silver after I sterilize. I've also added a bit of coconut oil. It helped, but the problem was that I had trouble getting the squeeze bottle clean, so I don't do that much. Another thing that can be added are probiotics. Obviously, you wouldn't boil those.

I also take guaifenesin. You can order a very large bottle of generic guaifenesin off the internet pretty cheap. I used to use the time release brand (Musinex), but I now find that the off-brand non-sustained-release, actually gets in there all at once and starts clearing things out. Everyone in my family has been taking it in the last few weeks, because Spring has sprung around here. i'm using a huge bottle of Kirkland brand, right now, from Amazon. I take two pills, and everything just liquifies and runs out, and the sinus headache clear up. Sinuses are notorious for making people's teeth ache.

Also, consider taking supplements internally that fight infection. Ginger, MSM, colloidal silver, probiotics, a very large dose of vitamin D3 (you can take up to 50,000 iu - 10 5,000 D3 gels -- daily for 1-2 weeks.) Doctors often prescribe something like this, and i watched it miraculously clear up a friend's skin condition once. Honey is also a good fighter of infection, and helps to reduce allergies which can help with sinus issues.

Also, if you find the right doctor, they might be willing to try you on an extended regimen of antibiotics, to see if there's some oral infection that can be cleared up. I strongly suspect you have oral infection hiding somewhere.

I had a friend who had tic doleroux. After years of agony, he determined he had an oral bone infection after a root canal. Doctors and dentists couldn't find it for years.

Best wishes and good luck with all this.

@gryfalcon - love your natural approach! Slightly off-topic, I keep those things in the pantry for all kinds of emergencies: coconut oil, colloidal silver, oil of orgegano...I recently added a jar of Australian Manuka honey w/ginger to the lot! But always keep organic raw honey too. The only other thing I could add is onion--I keep red ones.

Ah. A brother in arms. There's only one reason that I use this stuff. IT WORKS! :)

That's the most important as far as I see it, we stick to the stuff that works for us. ;)

I can tell you that I am still recovering from a systemic infection that had been building for years. I recently found out that there was a piece of a dental instrument stuck in my gum where I'd had a crown done years ago. Your symptoms sound similar to what i'd been experiencing, and like you, I went to many different professionals for diagnosis over the years, all found nothing, until a recent dental x-ray showed the implement piece.

In addition to the suggestions above, if you can afford it, i'd look for a really good alternative medicine doctor or chiropractor. I know some people don't like chiropractors, but if you find the right one, it could make a world of difference. I used to see one years ago who ran an extended battery of blood work that showed a lot more than the basic ones my other doctors ran. She was able to use those results to put me on a regimen of supplements that helped build my system back up. Of course that was before the systemic infection, and I live across the country now, so can't see her, but she had at least a Master's in Nutrition, in addition to her DC, and she really knew what she was talking about. I hope you're able to find someone who can help you, and put together a plan that works for you.

I think you should really go back to the dentist, the fact you are still in pain is not a good sign. Something might not be alright up there, better go see a different dentist and explain them what is wrong. I have heard from a couple members here who also have pain in that area, but is not so common in fibro, so I really think you should get that checked out. If you haven't gotten a panoramic x ray of your jaw/teeth then you should do it now. I've heard of terrible complications due negligence, so please don't assume this is caused by fibro or such, see other dentist and look for a second opinion, heck even a third or fourth opinion would be good!
