Hi,

I have had Fibro for about 20 years. I woke up one morning and my ears were really ringing and I couldn't hear good. I was finally sent to an ENT who said there was water in my inner ear. The ENT put tubes in but they wouldn't stay so after 4 sets of tubes he inserted permanent tubes. By all rights I should be able to hear now but I can't and my ears are ringing terribly so I am being sent on to a specialist in only hearing and ears.

Has anyone experienced ringing in the ears and the more stressed I get they get louder and I just can't hear. I am beginning to wonder if this is connected to Fibro Fog? I know I am stressed as I can't hear and stiill trying to work which is getting increasingly harder. My ears start ringing so loud and now I am starting to all most panic when I see someone coming to talk to me.

Just wondering if anyone has had these issues?

Bedbug

Sorry, Bedbug, that you're having so many troubles with your ears and with hearing. I've had only an occasional stab of ear pain, which I don't know whether it's fibro-related or not, but I wanted to let you know that we're glad you're here on the forum. Sorry I can't help you, but I hope there are others here who might be able to share their experiences and help you.

Hi,
My ears ring constantly and the volume does increase with stress and fatigue. I know what you mean about hearing--the phone is the worst for me. Sometimes when it's quiet, I feel as though I have a field of insects loudly singing in my ears!

Sorry to hear you are going thru this, bedbug :( I also have strange auditory symptoms, but I never thought they were linked to my fibro at all. I really hope you can find the answers that you are looking for with that specialist! Bet of luck with that appointment, I know how important some doctor appointments can be, specially when something as important as your hearing is at stake.

I too went to an ENT bloke who had a quick 30 look and couldn't see anything wrong. Never thought ear trouble was Fibro. My whole family has ear problems. Mine is a bit of tinitus but over the last couple years I have a really loud rushing/pounding noise that just won't go away. I don't have too much trouble hearing, if anything I am over sensitive to noises. This pounding is almost enough to drive me insane some days though so I feel for you Bedbug. I hope you get it sorted in the end.

Twiztc, your ear symptoms are very similar to mine. The ringing comes and goes and often I have was seems like water sloshing in my ears. The doctors say my ears are fine. Bedbug, I also find that the more I get stressed the louder the ringing. I don't think that our symptoms are necessarily always related to fibro but because we are more sensitive and susceptible that when other things are present it's just something else we have to deal with and adjust to along with the fibro. I've had ringing in my ears off and on for over 20 years. The weird rushing/sloshing sounds started about 3-4 years ago. Everyday it's something different literally. I try to not focus on it. The more you stress the more prominent the symptom becomes. When you have a strange illness like we do you have to try different ways of dealing with it. When the ringing is bad, whether it helps or not (it could just be coincidence), I rub the muscles on my face around my cheeks and around my ears while deep breathing. You can try tensing the neck and face muscles too and then relaxing a few times. It couldn't hurt right? I hope you feel better :)

Since my diagnosis, I have had major issues with my ears and hearing. It began with my ears not tolerating the sound of spoons stirring in a glass or scraping on a bowl. I worked in a hardware store, and I believe I have also gotten hearing damage from working there. Over time, sounds at work hurt my ears badly, such as a pallet being dropped, or the toilet seat slamming, or somebody using a leaf blower. The high-pitched beeping sound of the trucks backing up was torture. I finally realized that what I had was called hyperacusis, and it has no known cause or cure. I saw an ENT and described my symptoms- ringing in my ears, along with an occasional high pitched tone, ears feel blocked so that I hear my own pulse, and collapsed tolerance to sound. Everyday noises are painful, so much so that I have used earmuffs and earplugs to block out sound. The ENT saw nothing wrong with my ears and said there was no treatment that he could offer. I guess I just have to learn how to cope with this, and learn to live with it.

I also have problems with my ears. My left ear always feels like it has water in it, and sometimes it does. I keep drying drops in my bathroom closet for when I get water in my ears - almost every shower now. My mother said as a child I came very close to getting tubes. I also feel as if the left side of my face, into my left ear is numb all the time, and my hearing is dulled, but heightened at the same time, if that makes any sense at all. I have constant ringing in my ears, with changing intensity. I have considered going to the ENT to have them checked as I hear things nobody else does, but what would that accomplish? Also, I wear ear plugs as well. Mostly at night, but also when I am sitting next to someone who is typing or playing a game on their phone or if someone is on their treadmill upstairs, etc.

Hello im sorry your ears are causing problems. i too suffer with fibro. but not my ears. As we know fibro causes extra sensibility to aches and pain. I would say your problem is not due to fibro but accentuated by it. By this I mean that you do have an ear problem and the fibro makes it worse.. I doubt many ear or ent doctors are experts as well with fibro patients.. Just try another doctor, a bit like with my kneck problems as i also have severe arthritus in the c3-c7 region and spinal chord compression. I tried 5 or 6 different kyno practicioners befor finding one that did me any real good. His different methodes helped, although i no longer go i still have problems that are permenant. So keep trying and I hope you will find an ent that will have a solution to the problem. I think your fibro has acted like an early warning system and exaggerated a problem that is hard to detect. Hopefully with more acceptance of fibro all fields of medcine will understand more about what we suffer and feel in our bodies.
