I've been doing a bit more research on things and I've been reading about IUD's possibly making Fibro symptoms worse.

I'm interested in this because I recently decided to go with an IUD. I had mine inserted about two months ago. I went with Mirena. So far, I've had cramping, but that's normal for the first few months. I haven't noticed any pain symptoms getting worse. I've been a bit more tired than usual but I think that might be due to allergies.

Do any of you have an IUD? If you have/had one, do you think it makes your symptoms worse? Or do you think that the two are unrelated? At the moment, I don't feel like my symptoms are any worse. However, I'm still new to my Mirena, so like anything, only time will tell!

Hi apike, I've had a few friends who have had the Mirena inserted and unfortunately I only heard bad things about it. At least temporary all of them reported extreme cramping, nausea, circulation problems, migrains etc. Not sure whether the IUD affects your fibro, but I believe it might be a real possibility since the IUD changes your hormone balance and hormone changes can cause many problems. Sorry I'm not very helpful. Hopefully someone else can offer more advice for you. Hope you feel better :)

Hi there apike! I used the IUD for a while and let me tell you my experience with it wasn't good at all. At least the first months... I didn't use it for too long tho, because of all the ''side effects''. Back then I didn't know I even had fibro (I suspected it, but I hadn't seen a specialist). You should really consider other types of birth control... for reals. I plan to get of the pills sooner or later, then have all the kids I plan to have... then will probably get my tubes clipped.

I used Mirena and although I enjoyed the fact that I did not have to worry about having to remember to take a pill every day (at the time I didn't know I had Fibro as the REAL pain had not yet begun), I did have a good amount of discharge. I was told that this was normal and that it would go away within a few months. That was about six YEARS ago. Also, my chronic migraines started about then. I consider my migraines to be the beginning of the end - meaning the beginning of my real Fibro times. Although I have had symptoms since 2009, for the last 6 years is when it has been very hard for me.

Please, do your research before keeping it in, especially with Fibro.

I may be one of the few, but I have had my Mirena system for 2 years and love it. The first month was difficult because I could feel it, but now the only time it is troublesome to me is when I am constipated. I have not had any additional symptoms to my already existing symptoms although I have only been recently diagnosed. If hormones are an issue for you there is an IUD that does not have any hormones at all. It is called ParaGard, but the downside is that the first 6 months can cause heavier periods and more cramps and then return to normal. My problem before the Mirena was long, heavy, and painful periods, even while on birth control pills.

I was diagnosed after I had my Mirena removed. It was causing me horrible PMS symptoms and weight gain and muscle and joint pain. If I had fibro already, it definitely got worse after! I only had it about two years.

I have heard bad things as well. My sister had an iud that didn't give off any hormones, it was a very natural birth control and she didn't have any problem's with it. I hope that helps.

That is very interesting. When I was about 18 to age 40 years old I had an IUD. I finally had it taken out because I read that they were not too healthy. I had mine changed only about 2 times over a 20 year period. The specialist said it was safe to leave in indefinitely. That was back in the early 70's. I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia sometime after the IUD was taken out, maybe when I was around 43 years old. So maybe this has something to do with it. The second IUD I had was a copper 7, so I am thinking that the copper or metal inside the IUD could have leached out and caused nerve damage or something like that, just a theory, but very interesting.
