Default Do YOU know what brought on FMS?

I do, an emotional trauma in July 1999. IF, I do indeed deal with this syndrome, that is when it came on. The fight/flight/fright happening.

I was attempting to get thyroid "fixed" for 10 yrs prior and I feel thyroid was WEAK and the trauma brought this on.

I will add more later to this.

Add your reasons..

Hard to say....
14 years ago I had a very bad virus - couldn't keep anything in for over a week, ended up in emerg with an IV drip for electrolytes (2 bags) and a shot in my butt to stop my GI tract from spasming. After that I was unable to tolerate gluten...took me over a year to figure it out because it hurt to eat and gluten is in so many things, often hidden. And of course I just didn't think it makes sense...

Not sure if that was it - 5 years ago I started having joint pain that worsened. I got pneumonia 3x and ended up plasma injections because my immune system is somewhat dysfunctional (will be on that for life).

Since then neurology has shown I have lesions in my white matter....but a year later ruled out MS. Blood work ruled out Rheumatoid & Lupus...but of course I have all sorts of stuff in my blood from hundreds of peoples' plasma. The MS suspicion was scary.

IMHO, the true Fibro syptoms are probably only a year old - I'd like to go back to when it was just joint pain ! That seems like nothing now...

I am of course still being followed by doc and my blood specialist (who came up with Lupus orginigally). Such a mess.

Maybe it's a combo of all that stress ? I'm a health nut, active and eat clean...so that blows that whole fibro theory out of the water that cleaning up one's diet & lifestyle fixes things. Winters kill me, I'm modified my life a lot in terms of what I can do....need lots of rest. Ugh.

Stress I believe is a big one, since I was 61 at the major trauma, I know that MANY MANY years of working, and personal DETOURS along the way, added more unexpected stressors. So the Big Stressor, pushed me OVER and FOR ME, my thyroid was not in good SHAPE.

Glad so far no MS, my sister is challenged with aggressive MS. Work to keep as calm as you can. Just a couple minutes ago a stressor hit me with a so called friend and an issue, pushed me into pain.

I think mine likely stems from viral meningitis six years ago; quickly followed by surgery for cancer (caught in time). Add in years of living on overdrive and not managing stress and it was a perfect storm. I've had migraines and cluster headaches for years and OA for 10 years, so I'd dealt with pain for 50 years before fibro raised its ugly head.

I've never had a migraine, thank goodness, no one in my family either, an aunt did a long time ago, I believe grape seed extract has kept me very healthly thru all this. 20 yrs on it soon. J

I had laser tattoo removal which resulted in cellulitis and stage 2 thermal burn. The subsequent infection lowered my white blood cell count to less than 2. I ended up with a strep infection and mono. Mono is caused by the Epstein Barr virus which research is showing could trigger fibromyalgia. I'm currently working with a rheumatologist for a definitive diagnosis of fibro but she pretty much has already decided that is what is going on.

I have not had a trauma . The only thing I can think of is difficult pregnacies but my fibro didn't kick in until years later. For me I believe that it is hereditary, as my mom also had it along with a host of other aim met that I fortunately do not have. Just fibro for me, but that's enough!

Most likely the FM arrived on the heels of thyroid problems. I had 2 parathyroid surgeries to remove growths. Then I had Graves Disease that spiraled me into the worst sort of hell and took a few years to get under control,(after radio active iodine killed it--just before it killed me). Then it was female hormones. When those things were under some control I pursued my back trouble, which also included my kidney that had come loose. Then ankle surgeries and a hand surgery last year. Now it's knees, (but I've had knee problems since I was 10). It just never stops. I used to grow most of our food and meat, being very careful what I fed them in order to make our consumption as good as possible. It was A LOT of work but I loved it.

Pregnancies are trauma to everyone. The hip replacement I had in 2010, was more trauma than I ever dreamed...I worried since I had been given the Fibro diagnosed, which I do believe is thyroid related, and OA from age 18 and then the major surgery. Everything I've read it's from physical or emotional traumas.

YUP: I started training in powerlifting and teaching 7 yoga classes a week. I felt AWESOME for two years, set 14 records in powerlifting, and had one of the most popular yoga classes. Then gradually each joint started hurting and 4 years later...well, you all know how the rest of the story goes.

maybe some of the new folks would like to comment.

Most everything I've heard over many years is this "stuff", yes I call it stuff ... is brought on my physical or emotional trauma. For me it was a emotional trauma, a really tough one that attacked my body big time. Traumas can come in a lot of forms, even a surgery .. actually that can be a big one.

Mine started as soon as my son was born via c-section 15 yrs ago. It was very traumatic due to the lack of care in that place. I was 21yrs old, the nurses were terrible and the doctor was worse!
I was there for 5 days total. They tried inducing labor for 2 days, but did not take, then decided on day 3 to go to surgery.
I also had a bad kidney infection.

I was never the same....

I never had a day without pain after that.
It started in my lower body from hips down. Then after 3 months spread to whole body.
I was also under the worst stress of my life taking care of my sister's 4 young children (she has lupus). I didn't mind doing this for her, but I sure didn't deserve the emotional abuse I put up with from her husband along with the guilt trips. I did everything for them with no appreciation. I was exhausted and past my limit so I had to leave.

I know that I also had insomnia and restless leg syndrom as a child.

I have lived with stress my whole life, had depression since 17 and I think a major emotional issue happened and pushed me over board. I always pushed myself because I had to, I was a nurse and had really bad arthritis - I mean when you are signing up for a job, do you think of what illnesses you "might" get in the future. I was single with three kids. and then a horrible relationship that went sour really quick after it had been going great for a year. That was the final straw for me. I know that my thyroid has been tested a million times because I always have the symptoms of under active thyroid. My mom had Fibro I am sure of, but they didn't know what to call it then. Now just like everyone else I feel like I lost my life and am settling with what I can do now. I need about 10-12 hours of sleep to feel decent and that really sucks. The pain is pretty much ok - like 2-3 days, but when it gets worse I can be red-ridden. I think the exhausting thing for me is I always have pain somewhere. Getting out of bed is painful, walking to the bathroom is painful, it is really had to stay positive when you start your day like this everyday. I still work full time, I have an arrangement with my work that I work 4 days a week and have Fridays off, but I work from home on Fridays. It lets me sleep in at least. I feel like I sleep all weekend just to get the energy to work those 4 days. I will fight with this until I physically can't do it any longer. Then I will settle for the next thing I can do.
