Doc says I have "early" fibromyalgia. I need rest to help treat this but am having awful pain on upper arm and hip while sleeping on side. Other sleeping positions don't work for me.

The exhaustion is so incredibly debilitating I can't function at all anymore and stunned I haven't had a heart attack. The bags under my eyes are unbelievable and people look at me like I'm mentally ill or crazy, I look so bad. I just want to be rested enough to go back to work and to be able to show up for life. The isolation is very depressing.

Doc said to take Motrin before bed (doesnt last long enough through the precious early morning sleep I need); to get massages (I'm broke); to try Cymbalta (does this work or is it an old now-disproven therapy that barely touches the physical pain?)

He said my blood work was fine except for borderline anemia so he wants me to have iron infusions (this sounds crazy and like a "band-aid" to me - I just need some rest!)

I asked if there was a specialist of any type he could send me to for the pain and he said no. Isn't this where a good doc might refer me to a pain mgmt clinic or something?

By the way, I had to FIGHT to get him to even meet with me about this. I actually had to go to hospital administration to get him to see me!

Any suggestions?

You need to see a rheumatologost or a pain clinic if possible. We all have different level of symptoms and needs for pain relief.

You do need to rest and you do over time need to come to terms with fact if it is fibro or CFS you will need to look after yourself if you are going to manage it and accept you may not beable to be as active as before.

It takes time and lots of grieving to come to terms with this.

Different drugs help different people..its a case of research, read, and also discuss with a specialist . You are the best person to manage this condition...they can only do so much and some docs are better than others.

I hope you find this site helpful. You can ask anything ...vent your worries get advice and support.

For now try and reduce as much stress as possible...give yourself permission to rest and feel low...eat healthily...do anything that lifts your spirit listen to music or watch a movie you like.

My fibro started with periods of fatigue that came and went for 20 years before real pain started. If i could give you one bit of advice it would be not to push yourself now as i had lots of years where i recovered enough to still enjoy a good life for months at a time.

Take Care

If your iron levels are low this can increase your fatigue. Sounds to me like your doctor is trying which makes him great in my book because many doctors look the other way as far as fibro is concerned. When mine started back in the 1990's, fatigue was the worse thing. I was too tired to do anything. If you try resting and by that I mean doing fun things at home like watching movies that make you laugh and quiet times with books or music, and not pushing to get everything done at once. Pace yourself and things will slowly improve. I know it sounds overwhelming and a real bummer but over time it gets better.
Go through the sections here there are several that are about medications and alternatives to try. Good luck I pray things will turn around for you and know we are all here for you in this struggle. :)
