Does anyone else suffer from joint laxity/hypermobility? I have it in most of my joints & it is a nightmare & along with fibro is the most problematic. My ankles are seriously unstable, I've been to a podiatrist who has provided me with orthotics as I have almost no arches on my feet. He diagnosed the ankle instability & recommended what type of footwear to use. I am currently wearing flat shoes that I bought from a specialist shoe shop as they are made in different shoe widths & are deep enough to accommodate the orthotics. They were £75 so not exactly cheap & tonight I was at the shops with my 2 daughters who are 10 & 12 & I went over on my ankle badly & the only thing that stopped me crashing to the ground was me grabbing hold of my 12 year old! I know there isn't really anything anyone can suggest other than to see my podiatrist again, I just wanted to vent. :-(

Some times my knees feel sloppy...but most of the time they are stiff....sometimes i wonder why they feel strange and sloppy and give way. Its not that often for me..the stiffness and pain is worse but it sound like this could cause you injury so it must be worrying and frustrating to be permanently unstable.

I don't know anything much about hypermobility except i hope your special footwear helps as time goes on. vent away!

Venting can feel real good, this is the right place to vent :) Hypermobility with fibro...that does sound real painful and scary. I really hope you have good doctors and great support around you (literally as well :))

I don't know whether you already watch these, but I've seen quite a number of vloggers who post videos on how they deal with hypermobility. They might have some helpful tips.

I don't have hypermobility but, years ago a friend of mine had something similar with her ankles (her story is a complicated one, but her ankles were unsteady after multiple surgeries). She used to wear boot-like shoes almost every day. Only on hot days would she switch to these ankle strap/brace like thing (I am sure it has a proper name) that were custom made for her. She also almost always had a single crutch with her (sometimes 2 crutches), mainly because we have very bad pavements and she was scared of falling and needing another surgery.

I know it sucks to have to use crutches, but for safety, it is sometimes a must. I used crutches for about a year after my wrongly fixed ankle and foot, I hated getting comments on it, but I at least felt safer walking and being outside.

Wishing you the best!

Thanks for your replies. It's just been a bad day all round! The other problem I've been having is really bad spasms in my calves at night in bed, I roll over in bed & my calf will spasm really badly & the only thing that helps is to get out of bed as quickly as possible and walk around, this happened 3 times last night making me knackered & suffering more, fibro really is meant to test us! Here's to hopefully a good nights sleep tonight

I have most hypermbility on my hands and fingers especially my thumbs , I have very long fingers comparing to people my size it run in the family. My thumb can pop in and out and can bend backward easily , I can easily pop my hands out of most handcuff unless it complete tight to my wrist.

I was a pianist and played paino since I was 3, I can easily stretching my finger beyond 13 keys, but since fibro I can no longer touch or play paino any longer. every day just typing hurts thanks god for touch screen but my wrist also double joint and always in pains alway need to wear wrist brace .

I also have almost no aches on my feet with extra long toes , when I wear high heel the top of my feet never curve just stright down completely. I busted my ankles all the time from just simply walking now. I use to enjoy modern dance and all dance in general do to my flexibility as my advantage, now it's a painful cursed. My shoes and supports can either be super expensive or super cheap nothing between, and I'm on walking cane.

I think finding out your mineral deficency would help your spasm if you are anything like me, my body flushing all my minerals and vitamins everyday , I can never get enough of electrolytes minerals and need loads of calcium.

Thanks Tipnatee, I'll definitely look into mineral deficiency. How did you go about finding out? I don't want to tell my GP, rheumatologist etc how to do their job but at the same time it would be really beneficial to find out. I realised that when I wear shoes with any heel at all, even a small block one I am plagued by bad muscle spasms/cramps in my calves or worse still my thigh. I'm not planning to wear anything other than flat shoes anytime soon but I wonder if finding out about mineral deficiencies and taking supplements would make a difference. That's definitely given me something to investigate though, thanks very much. I really appreciate it.

Take care. x

You know the saying that we know our self best? Research online can help you locating your deficiency. I was lucky to had some contacted with my old family doctor oversea at one time only which was not that long ago do to my anemia problem had return after being dianosed with fibro. It was a quick conversation but it gave me an idea of how much my body loose vitamins and mineral each day because I was anemic before. Then through trying to fix my anemia I came across stuffs that actually help my suffering points in fibro too. But that was also because I added it on top of my research on what supplement that most fibro are lacking.

Then after trials and errors , I have found what I my self actually need to take daily. Cause oddly my B12 is so high my fibro doctor was baffle about it and gave up lookng in to my deficiency problem. My teeth was falling and crumbling out of my mouth ( talk about true nightmare) , my hair was fallen off so much I had rock my head shaved my buzz cut for a while 8) , and my nails was peeled and brittled with white spottes and bruised . That was how bad my deficiency was for me.

Luckily because of that I gains lots of knowledges about my own body. I might not even going to mention it to my doctor in the future visit too ,so that he can finally focus on the matters that I cannot fixing it my self.

Joint lubrication such as collagen also a must have take which pretty much a big problem with hyper-mobility people. Basically just eat lots of jell-o . I bought unflavor gelatin powder for cooking, omg It's the best way to make meatless broth , or boosting food experince by giving it a velvet like silky texture.

But for the precautions, don't hide it from your doctor if they ask about any supplements taking do to sometime any drugs they might put you on later may have some interference with some supplement of your choosing. You can also say " I'm taking a multi supplements for my heath and watchin my diets so is anything I should avoid?" that should cover your problem with any doctors ;)
