Definition:

Ayurvedic medicine or Ayurvedic are systems of traditional medicines that are native to the Indian subcontinent.  They are also forms of alternate medicine.

The oldest known ayurvedic documents are the Suśrutha Saṃhitā and the Charaka Saṃhitā which are classical Sanskrit texts found among the foundational and formally compiled works of ayurveda.

Treatments and practices derived from Ayurvedic medicine are regarded as alternative medicine.  By medieval times these ayurvedic doctors had developed a number of medicinal preparations and surgical procedures for the treatment of various ailments.

There are many concerns with Ayurvedic medicines.  Studies in North America have shown that up to 20% of Ayurvedic U.S. and Indian-manufactured patent medicines sold through the internet contain toxic levels of heavy metals.
