Have a friend who takes care of homebound people…she says the lady takes 2 mg of prednisone about twice a week to manage pain. Can a person take it only only when they have a flare? Any side effects?

My mom and I take 5mg. two a day for a couple days then one a day for a couple days when we can’t cope with the big flares. It really helps us. My pain management specialist told me Long term use can cause osteoporosis.
I had a bone scan a few months back and my bone density is great.

Any steroidal medication is very bad to take long term. the only use for it that is not terribly harmful is very short term use to manage a brief period of intense pain such as after an injury or surgery, although I would personally refuse it even then. It does no good and is very harmful, as all it does is stimulate the adrenal system and fools your system into thinking all is well when it is not. Osteoporosis is only one of many things it can cause to go haywire in the body.

my doctor put me on prednisone first at 25mg per days for 3 days then on 5 mg per gay the 25mg gave me the best 3 days I have had the 5mg did nothing then she put me on 15mg a day which stopped the flares etc but she really does not like me being on it so cut it back to 10mg a day. the tablets depress the immune system and she seems worried that with the amount of flu and covid in the town I might get them. but they do work for fibromyalgia i also take lyrica

Thank you so much for your response! I’m glad it is helping you with the debilitating pain. I’ve been managing flares with acetaminophen, ibuprofen and daily walks, when I feel up to it. I decided not to take prednisone until absolutely necessary…so many harmful possible side effects.

Sometimes the acetaminophen and ibuprofen won’t touch the pain, so I must deal with it.

I agree with others in this forum to do everything you can to reduce or eliminate the trigger of stress. My last really bad flare happened at the same time as an abscessed tooth and subsequent course of antibiotics. Of course the antibiotics no doubt killed off the good bacteria in my gut, which I believe is connected to fibromyalgia pain.
